How do others handle this?
I have been in sex shops many times over a number of years, mostly to shop for toys, but I never seem able to overcome my embarrassment and discomfort when taking my purchases to the counter to pay for them. I still can't decide whether I prefer the person serving me to be male or female, I feel equally awkward with either. I always wonder what they are thinking about me when they check out what I am buying, and today when I bought a new masturbator, it was no different, I tend to fix my eyes on the counter while paying, avoiding any eye contact. I would have thought I'd be used to it by now, but not at all, every time feels like the first time.

I always felt the same way until last time. The person ahead of me in line was so open and was asking questions about products etc I finally thought to myself they wouldn't be working here if they didn't want to and she obviously knew about the products! I decided I was a big girl and put on my big girl panties and asked questions and paid proudly! If it still bothers you order online!

I don't care when there's a male clerk working, but I hate buying porn from women. Sometimes I swallow it up and make my purchase, sometimes I just leave.

To be honest I love seeing women who are confident in sex shops. You have no reason to be shy. Confidence is the sexiest thing about a woman, and you should always be confident and secure in your sexuality.

Yep, I just buy on line now but certainly remember feeling very self-conscious in sex shops when younger. "I'd like to buy this please - oh yes and shopkeeper stranger my sexual turn on as you can clearly see are..."

When it comes to sex toys, as embarrassed as I get, I'd still rather go to the store than buy online. One reason is that I like to see the actual product, and take it home for immediate use rather than wait for postal delivery. The second reason is that I don't like the names of sex shops showing on my credit card statement.

I've been lucky enough to do some business with a few sex shops and one of my friend's girlfriend actually owns one. Buying porn etc has never really bothered me, but certain toys that I've bought I wouldn't choose for my mates to know about, so I've bought them from shops thatI've done business with or online.

Personally, if you're in a sex shop, everyone's in there to buy something to have fun with, so what's the problem. Be proud of the fact that you know what you like and you are adult enough to go out and get it. There's nothing to be ashamed of.

I wear a burqua every time. Works a treat.

Haha, very fuuny indeed, but not a bad idea, now where would I get a burqua, and how weird would I look climbing off my motorbike outside the sex shop in a burqua.
On the serious side, another fear I have is bumping into somebody I know while browsing the goods.

I know what you mean. I never go by myself - too embarrassed.

I feel very similar when I am inquiring and requesting to the cashier at the sex shops here in New Mexico, for change to enter the adult theaters! :) I had no problems in buying porn, but I was quite apprehensive and timid in buying a butt plug and a small dildo for myself once, because the two clerks were a stunning Latina and a Navajo woman at The Pussycat Theater in Albuquerque! :-D

I hate buying porn from women because it makes me feel like a loser.
"Hi, I don't have a woman at home to have sex with, so please sell me this magazine so I can take care of business myself............... "

That's exactly how I felt this morning when buying the masturbator, even though I am married and certainly not sex starved, I just happen to really enjoy masturbation too, but I'm not about to explain that to the assistant now, am I?

I always, always feel awkward in adult stores. I find it to be slightly less uncomfortable if I don't go alone. When I bring a friend or five, it's easier to put on a brave face. Maybe this would work for you? Or shop online, like others have suggested.
