Shrimp slaves...food for thought

Didn't work for me. I bet you like being off Island speed.

Ok, it worked. Hate to think I'm eating Asian shrimp. But I guess I am. So why isn't shrimp cheap as hell now?

Yeah, I'm beyond happy to have my high speed back. Even just posting and reading here is so much easier.

As for the shrimp, it's complicated but the bottom line is that it is already cheap as hell. It shouldn't be any cheaper. It's one of the foods on my "will not eat" list. I know that I can go down to Safeway and buy a huge bag of giant Tiger Prawns for $9 - that's ridiculously cheap - but I never will.

Well, you *can* buy shrimp (or tilapia, or other seafood) that's not harvested in Asia. You'll pay through the ass for it, but ...

I don't eat shrimp. Period. It's just a sea bug.

And chocolate is just tree seeds but you eat those I'm sure.

So about the topic.

By not buying, sweatshop workers are out of the job, will probably starve.

Would you eat a grasshopper or a spider? Then why do you eat bugs from the sea? I mean, ew!

Grasshoppers, well crickets I have eaten, and spiders, probably, if cooked and delicious.

Insects are actually a great source of protein without the fats. People should eat them more, they are good believe it or not.

Ew. I don't eat bugs, and I don't care if they were wet before they were boiled. I also don't eat lobster or crab (and yes I tried them). Yuck

More interestingly -
Are they any good?

Its pretty much the dish you will taste, it's hard pinpoint a flavor, rather empty really. I thought it was kind of like eating an unsalted puffy cracker or something. It's more texture that you notice, they crunch between your teeth.

You know I can understand not wanting to eat those little things that run around a tad bit too fast. But when they are dead, it's a totally different matter.

What tends to freak me out is ground meat. That's more a trust thing though, don't really trust those that do the grinding.

My brother's company sent him to Duke for a evaluation and they told him that shrimp was one of the best things he could eat. Well, before they canned his ass anyway.

The shrimp from oversea's suck, no flavor and God only knows what they have been through. Most are farm raised and have no taste at all. It is up to us Americans to make a difference by not buying crap and putting it on outr tables as if it is food. Stop watch American go down the tupes and make a difference! Only "The People" can make a change for "The People"

Does anyone notice this?

Cheap fish about 10 years ago = cod. Now expensive, overfished to high prices.
Cheap fish about 2 years ago = catfish. You saw it everywhere - and now I hardly ever see it in the store let alone know the pricing on it.
Cheap fish today = tilapia.

I predict 9-12 a pound in a couple years and we'll be eating smelt ground up like a chicken mcnugget of fish into fish(TM)

I'm going to try the tilapia tonight. It's frozen and that worries me a little. But I guess all the fish here are frozen at some point. I really like salmon a lot. And trout. I need to do more fishing next year.

The Duke university medical center. Duke is one of the top ten universities in the country.

Ah. I've heard of Duke university, I didn't know they have a medical center. *shrugs*

I, honestly, am not real big on sea food, period. I only eat white (cod, tilapia, etc) fish and fresh salmon. Everything else is gross, as far as I'm concerned. The weird thing, though, is that chances are I'm allergic to shell fish. I'm allergic to glucosomine which is normally made from shellfish. It makes me SWELL. I took it orally, once, and my face swelled up. K put this msm/glucosomine stuff on his shoulder, once, and I reached out and patted his shoulder that night and my hand swelled up. LOL I mentioned this to my doctor and he said 'are you allergic to shell fish?' and I said 'i don't eat shellfish, so I'm not sure' and he said 'you are probably allergic to shellfish'. lol

Is this the thread I come to for gloating about being a vegetarian? *smirks*

I hear seaweed is the best food item for human consumption. It has everything we need.

And its yummy.

Studies also show that hominids must have evolved along a coast because sea critters are the only things that can provide us with all the nutrients we need.

That's like a nun gloating about not having sex. Get out of here.
