The Department of Justice on Tuesday made the unprecedented decision to take over the president's defense in a defamation lawsuit brought by E. Jean Carroll, a columnist who last year accused Mr. Trump of sexually assaulting her over two decades ago. Carroll is suing Mr. Trump in his personal capacity, and he was previously represented by private attorneys.

The sudden intervention by the Justice Department comes a month after a judge denied a request to stay the litigation, which meant Mr. Trump may have to produce documents and a DNA sample and sit for depositions in the lead up to the November election.

For now, the case will be removed from New York State Supreme court and moved into the Southern District of New York where a federal judge will decide whether the DOJ can step in on Mr. Trump's behalf.

Absolutely not. Only shows Republican's true colors.

This is a plot to not have to give DNA before the election...nothing more

Looks like we know who the yes vote is. :)

Any time there is mention of a sexual assault trial, it is a near-statistical certainty that one or moar of Lit's Rape Enable Krewe (the Housesquaw, Coronager and/or HisArpy) will show up with a full-throated defense of "the Masculine Perogative" reciting the Lit Rape Enabler Creed:

"It's not rape if she didn't resist! It's not resistance unless she had bruises AND broken bones! It's not rape unless she reported it less than an hour after it happened. And most of all...it's not rape if she knew who did it. "Stranger Danger" is teh only REAL rape!"

Republicans'

He has a sister who hates him.

They can use her DNA. This is a nuisance suit. At best.

Yes, sexual assault is a “nuisance” to some.

Donny is broke. His campaign has already spent an insane amount of money on lawyers. His boi Barr would like us to pick up the tab on this one.

From its link:

The government is justifying the decision to involve the DOJ by claiming that the president is protected by The Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), a law that essentially shields federal employees from civil litigation, because he "was acting within the scope of his office or employment at the time of the incident out of which the claim arose."

That's why we have so many lawyers...

That's also why lay persons like the OP opine on things they don't understand
because it seems to fit in with their sense of political opportunism
as verses really delving into the issue and
exploring its many facets.

I wasn't aware the Oval Office was sued.

His campaign is broke and we've been told for nearly five years
that he is lying about having money because he was
such a poor businessman that he was already
destitute and just lying about it.

You guys really need to keep your storyline straight.

A bit of background on the FTCA:

The FTCA is meant to protect civil employees from lawsuits brought as a result of their official duties.

Calling E Jean Carroll a liar is not part of the president's official duties.

If, however Trump drafted an EO and a lawsuit was brought against that - then the FTCA would come in to play.

Trump’s family ought to be able to cover the costs. Could there be a reason why they wouldn’t? Can nobody take out a home equity loan this time?

There’s no difference in any story. His campaign funds are easy enough to track. His FEC filings will be done no matter how long the campaign wants to delay releasing their numbers. I’m sorry you protect yourself from getting that information.

I would have worded the poll differently. I would have asked if you want you tax dollars to go toward defending Trump. Although, I’m sure the answers would be very similar.

They best be quick. The gravy train will soon leave the station. The Trumps will be left on the decrepit, crumbling platform.

Time to sell those golf courses that Donnie claims on his taxes are worth half of what they are. Then comes the tax evasion charges.

This is your personal opinion.

The rationale was laid out clearly by the DOJ's spokesperson that the President was being asked questions on the issue by the press during an official press conference. As such, all of his comments were done in the performance of his duty as President.

I haven't seen the tapes, but it would be interesting to see if the question was prefaced with "Mr. President..." If so, it would solidly place the question as one being asked of an official in his official capacity.

At the time of the alleged assault, E Jean Carroll was certainly Trump's "type".

Lots of his other accusers don't look like the kind of woman anyone would want to fuck, but she was definitely hot enough for Donald's reputation.

I find it interesting that she says she has his cum on her coat, a coat she's kept for decades as "proof".

But beyond that, who cares?

She obviously survived the alleged ordeal, has a self-authored track record for making poor decisions with her vagina and it's way too long ago to deserve anyone's time or money.

Except it was not a single incident.

"Through express statements and deliberate implications, [Trump] accused Carroll of lying about the rape in order to increase book sales, carry out a political agenda, advance a conspiracy with the Democratic Party, and make money," the lawsuit states. "He also deliberately implied that she had falsely accused other men of rape. For good measure, he insulted her physical appearance."

Trump issued a statement after the allegation was published fiercely denying her claims and asserting that he'd never met Carroll, despite a photo of the two accompanying her book excerpt. In that statement, Trump solicited information from anyone who knew whether Carroll was working with the Democratic Party.

The president later told The Hill in an exclusive interview that Carroll was "totally lying," adding "she’s not my type."

The White House in a statement on Monday ripped the lawsuit as a money grab by Carroll.
