I've written a bloody mirror scene.

The worst part is that I didn't even notice I was doing it.

It's all over, isn't it?

Does looking in the mirror itself reveal something about the character? Is it important to the plot? Does it move the action forward?

In other words- as long as it's not a gratuitous mirror scene, you should be ok;)

'My 36DDs sagged downwards as I saw reflected in the mirror the blood-stained body of my partner hanging from the light fitting with my control bra cutting deeply into his slashed throat. I peered closely as I used Kleenex to dab away the last blood spots from my uncontrolled breasts.

How was I to know that my obsession with mirrors and his obsession with my 36DDs would drive him to such a messy suicide just because I wanted a breast reduction?

It had been a good bra. Would a biological washing powder remove the stains? I freshened my make-up while waiting for the emergency sirens to wail to a stop outside our block.'

Here is a good example:D

how about an entire story that takes place in a mirror scene?

Virginia Woolf's The Lady in the Looking Glass: A Reflection more your style? :)

(And, for the record - yes, I agree, it's not the mirror but the gratuity of its use. I'm gradually fighting back the panic.)

Totally depends on why you wrote it, Shanglan. It has its major submissions, its cliches, and its avant-garde meanings? You did not give the paragraph here, where you use it in context (or maybe you do later than this post)? I have seen many different mirror scenes ... reluctantly written one for sure, but it depends ... on context. Where is the mirror and why does your character need it? :)
