Anyone any good at the Japanese art of shibari? If so who trained you? Or did you learn yourself? To me it looks really nice.

I don't really "know" it, but I attended a seminar/demonstration of it once. It's something that I'm very interested in learning.

"Knot-tying" was the only boy scout merit badge I ever earned.

You may pick up some previous conversations at this thread link to RJ's Building Blocks. Aspects of appreciation for Kinbaku/Shibari have been expressed by several members of the Board :rose:

I am good at it, I was trained by an "old school" Domme in San Francisco several years ago...

are there like a small number of really experienced people who know shibari thoroughly? or is it somewhat common?

my guess is that someone really good at the art is not all that common, but that just might be my arrogance speaking.

I would not be so arrogant as to claim to be any good at it. I've learned from people who are. It is a small but thriving niche in the SM world - there are rope events where bondage is the specific focus.

I have just enough arrogance to was I am good, well, I was good. I have not tie a knot of rope on someone for so long I am not so confidant in my skill today.

I am certain if you were good you were probably better than I am! I can see how that might be seen as calling you out in my post, not at all, just talking about where I'm at.

I did not feel called out at all - in fact I had a good chuckle at your post and I just had to respond. I had a bit of hubris running last night.

huggy huggy &

I met this Dom once at a party in New Hampshire who tied a real mean knot. He offered to wrap me and...well you get the picture. Unfortunately I was green to the scene and turned him down.

d

I've pointed this thread out to my Master. I think he's good :)

My slave is very kind. I'm competent. I like shibari and rigging in general. I studied in Japan while living there as a student. I got a broad education indeed, lol.

Rope bondage has been a life long learning process for me.

I am sure that you just need someone to practice on.

While I make no claims to being a shibari expert I would say my bondage style is heavily influenced by shibari. No one taught me but over the past 10 years or so I've taught myself. How? I started from looking at pictures of ones tied by proper shibari masters and then deonstructing the rope work and learning how to work the knots and such. Once I had that I found someone to practice on. She and I formed a partnership for over ayear where we worked on it together. She appreciated the aesthetic side of it and we are both photographers so it worked well for us. I learned alot with her and after that I started working the style into my normal Dom/sub relationships.

Real shibari is very much centered arund ceremony and such, like many things Japanese. What you mainly see on the web is only a tip of it. it's more pretty girls tied up and dominated for paying web audiences to wank too. I would suggest trying to find a proper shibari demonstration in your city. They are rather frequent in places like San Francisco, NYC, LA and Seattle. They are well worth attending to not only see the pacing of a real shibari scene but the level of interaction and itimacy between the tier and the tiee (sp?). Shibari, in a classic way, is not about sex. In fact the subject is rarely ever touched sexually and definately never used in that way. It's much more of partnership between two people who appreciate the visual appeal and level of trust and intimacy involved with it.

It really is a wonderful thing, rope bondage and it's many forms.

My best adive, like others have mentioned here. Is to find a subject to ork with. Learn basic knot tying and such and then work with tying someone. Not only do you need to learn how to tie someone but you need to know how to do it safely. Watch your subject circulation, learn about how lood flows in the body and learn about how much your subject can take. You'll also want to learn about different types of rope. I'd suggest going to home depot and buying some 3/8" braided nylon rope. It's thick and softens nicely after a few uses. Avoid cotton clothesline until you learn about blood circulation. Avoid oiled twines...as they can really hurt someone until you know how to use them and/or have a subject who is willing to experince some suffering. Also, at first, you don't need the fancy silk ropes BDSM shops sell. It is nice and all but it is best used on a subject where you have a long term connection with.

hello

Thanks. Great advice. I'm gonna have a problem with the finding someone to tie up part. I did an online search and found a monthly meet where people interested in this meet up on a regular basis. It is a sort of meet and greet with free refreshments. Couldn't find anyone in my area who does demonstrations (with the credentials) but I'm sure I just need to look harder.

Max and Monk are both partners of Mistresse Matisse. I know Max gives lesson in Seattle and Monk does a fair amount of traveling. You also might check Midori's site since she does travel around the country quite a bit.

Max's site

Twisted Monk

(sorry I don't have Midori's site on my desktop atm but you can easily google her).
