After receiving an introduction to rope work last weekend, I'm enjoying this thread even more, as I'm now able to appreciate some of the subtleties involved in selection of rope, looping styles, choice of knot and so on. Oh... and also the time that it takes to make these constructions.

It is more fun (I personally find) improvising rope from scratch. But that is just me personally.
