What are your thoughts on her making this public?.... She's arguebly the best Pro Basketball player in the nation.... she's won three MVP awards and is a marketable name for her sport and as an Athlete as a whole.... She was the first woman to have a shoe name after her.....

ok so all the accalades.... I think this is a wonderful thing.... I know she was married for 8 years and has a child ... This is going to rock her world along with her family.........

She discounts critics who say it's easier for a high profile female athlete to come out of the closet than it is for a male athlete......

What are your thoughts.....

I'm glad she did it.. even though I don't think everyone needs to know everyone elses business and sexual orientation.. maybe, just maybe it will help other's realize how common homosexuality is in America.. that it's not going to go away.. ...

 I'm sure she would be glad to hear that she could enhance a few guys fantasies.

I think it's great that she has the courage to come out openly like this. When you're in her situation, it's even harder than when you're just a mere mortal like me or you.

I dont think it has or will hurt her at all. I really dont think people care anymore.

I didn't say it would hurt her, I said it took courage for her to come out. It's the fear of coming out that's the biggest obstacle to overcome. Most people are afraid what their family and friends will think. A person like Swoops have even more than those things to worry about.

role model

When I read this I was thinking, "well, one annoying thing she will have to deal with now is that instead of just being a basketball player, she will have to be a representative for a group, instead of just being herself." But at the same time, perhaps professional athletes are particularly ready for this role. After all, she already has to be a role model for women, a role model for female athletes, and a role model for African-American women. I guess if she just throws on the mantle of role-model for lesbian women as well, it's no big deal. But I'm sure she'd rather just play the game.

Yeah, I remember how pissed many dykes were at Ellen when she came out in 1997. After the coming out, Ellen didn't seem very inclined to talk about it much. She didn't want to crusade for gay rights or stuff like that, she just wanted to be honest about it. I remember how annoyed I were at all the whining dykes that wanted some new poster child and seemed to think Ellen did something wrong by just wanting to do her thing.

Agreed. And in the long run, didn't it come out (pun not intended, but not removed) better? Ellen now has a successful career again with her daytime show. She can be in a children's movie (Finding Nemo) and host awards shows. So instead of a crusading former comedienne, we have someone who reminds straight America that a lesbian is a normal person like everyone else. And in the end, that's the goal of the movement - to let us all be just normal people with the person we love standing at our sides in open view of the world.

I totally agree. What the world needs is to realize that gay people are people, just like everyone else. If we are ever to be totally accepted, that is more important than to constantly tell people how to think about homo- and bisexuality and to instantly slap people on the fingers when they do something that could perhaps be interpeted as maybe a little politically incorrect.

I mostly agree with this, except that no group in the history of the world has ever been "totally accepted" by a free society.

Freedom includes the freedom to think what you want, even if that means disapproving of homosexuality, as long as one doesn't go around infringing upon the rights of others to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
