Ok so I did go thru the stickies first, and I didn't see anything that looked like it applied so if I'm repeating a question I apologize ahead of time. I shave and have shaved my pussy for a long time, but I've always seems to have a bit problem with ingrown hairs. Talk about annoying. It's never been that big of a deal, but lately I'm just tired of it. Anyone have any solutions or suggestions?

Exfoliate, exfoliate, and exfoliate some more. Do it after shaving, and also on the days between if you do not shave every day.

There are also creams, liquids and lotions that help some people, such as bikini zone and tend skin, but none worked well, or even seemed to help at all for me.

An old stripper's trick is to apply stick deodorant to the freshly shaved area.

You could have it lasered, then you wouldn't have to mess with it at all.

So I just about choked to death while drinking my orange juice when I read this. My MOM told me this wonderful tidbit when I first started shaving. I think I'll have to ask more questions about her past....or maybe I just don't want to know. :(

Your mom is a woman too. Why do you think her desires would be any different than yours?

Hookers aren't the only women who use deodorant after they shave, that's an old trick. Wiping down with alcohol after shaving works for a man, but I’m not sure I would recommend it for a woman. Basically, anything that kills the bacteria that can inflame shaved skin, and help keep it dry.

Not wearing any underwear helps... Wherever anything is constantly rubbing against your skin you are more prone to ingrown hairs.

While I'm sure there are people on this board who would be into or amiable to knowing their mother's sexual past, I'm simply not. I respect my mother's need for desires, but in no way, shape, or form do I want to know about them.

Exfoliation is the key to preventing ingrown hairs. I always exfoliate before shaving or waxing (in the case of waxing, do it the day before), and have never had an ingrown hair.

Tea tree oil solutions are great after, too. You can mix some into witch hazel and wipe down after, or even mix a drop or two into a mild lotion, like Aveeno (which is silicone-based and doesn't contain parabens, fragrances, etc.).

I have to recommend "The Art of Shaving" here. When I was in Vegas I came across one of their wet shave shops and did some shopping; some brilliant, brilliant stuff there. I purchased a full set and have been using it ever since, haven't had an ingrown hair or any shave irritation since then. Definitely some of the best money I've put down on any product.

Key points, which I haven't looked for but would be really surprised if they aren't in the stickies:

1) Shave just after a shower. The hot water and steam will open up pores, making it easier to get a closer shave with fewer passes. It also relaxes the hairs.

2) Determine direction of hair growth. My beard is fucked up like Chechnya, I have a patch on my neck that grows upwards towards my jaw, the rest of my beard grows downwards. If I'm not careful when I shave, I forget about this patch and end up with extreme irritation for shaving against the grain with the first pass.

3) Shave with a clean, new razor. If you're using the same razor you use on your legs or underarms, you're inviting all sorts of pain. My girlfriend and I mark one razor a month for intimate use; shaving once weekly, averaging three or four times a month. Your mileage with razor blades may vary. Women's razors are often inferior to men's for pubic shaving, I find, consider Mach 3s or similar blades. Don't worry, you won't cut yourself unless you move laterally (side to side) on the shaving stroke.

4) Shaving oils are nice kit. Rub this into the area to be shaved with your fingers beforehand; you won't need much if you get it. The oil helps lubricate and cushion the skin, and the motion of your fingers massaging into the skin helps lift the hair making it easier for the razor to gain purchase and cut the hair.

5) Lather up with plenty of hot water when you work that lather. Aerosol shaving foams are not the best kit, they're like whipped cream. I'd recommend a proper shaving soap or lather. The hot water will help keep pores open and hairs soft. Remember: Hot as in "That's a bit close to scalding," not boiling.

6) Short strokes. If you run long you clog the razor with hair and dead skin; shaving is an harsh exfoliating process; nature of the beast what with dragging a blade over skin. Rinse the razor in hot water. Mantra: Like a hot knife through butter. I find I can usually make an inch and a half stroke on my girlfriend, and likewise on my face, when shaving. Again, your mileage may vary.

7) Don't over-shave. If you feel the need to go back over something, don't be afraid to re-lather. This helps protect the skin.

8) Rinse with cool water. Helps close up the pores and prevents shit getting in them.

9) Apply some sort of fragrance-free lotion as a post-shave, to rejuvenate and rehydrate skin.

Nasty_Deeds recommended wiping down with alcohol after a shave, I would recommend against this. Anything that dries and tightens the skin will aggravate ingrown hair problems; it'll trap any hair that's trying to free itself after being pressed down too firmly. If you do that, or shave against the grain consistently, you can actually train hairs to bend over and grow backwards into the skin - something I've done by accident. I recommend against this for obvious reasons: perpetual ingrown hairs are about as much fun as a pogo stick and a minefield.

So many great tips! I have this problem too!
One other thing, piggy backing on the clean new razor, I always sanitize mine with rubbing alcohol and then rinse before use. Exfoliating is key, it cant be said enough. Also, something cooling I think helps irritation as well. I'm a fan of bikini zone or aloe or something to calm as well. I think next time though, I'm trying deodorant and/or the tea tree oil!

I also find that waxing creates less ingrown hairs...but that might not be something you're willing to try. For me, its just too much money to justify.

Ugh. Deodorant.
Make sure if you do this one, that no one is going down there after. Trust on this, worst taste ever.

Oh wow! So many replies! I posted this before work and came back and talk about surprise. Thank you for everyones wonderful suggestions. I do have one question though, as everyone kept talking of exfoliating, what are some of the preferred brands/types?

I use a rougher bath pouf (you know the net puff thingy that you can get for $1 or so?) on more sensitive areas and actually a soapy blue scotch brite scrubby sponge on my legs and arms (Hubby has psoriasis and we found the sponge to be the best exfoliator for that, so I tried it gently on my arms and legs, and it works great). Of course we change out and sanitize these things regularly. The sponges can be put in the top rack of the dishwasher or microwaved in water.

You could also use baking soda or sea salt, though. Sugar is a great exfoliant, but I'd avoid using it in your pubic region due to the potential for yeast infections. If you do use salt or sugar, you can easily make a nice scrub by mixing it with some oil until it's like a looser paste. Baking soda can just be mixed into a paste with a bit of water, and is a great facial exfoliant (it might be a little too fine for hairy areas unless you have really sensitive skin or something).

I'm so thankful for this thread :)

I shaved myself this morning and put deoderant on afterwards, so we'll see how it works out!

So far, the skin down there feels really soft and smoothe :D

Thank you so much for the suggestions. Wanted to make sure if some people did just that, or if they used the scrubs as I was hesitant to use a scrub. It just didnt seem right but wanted to check.

I'd say use whatever you want, as long as it's safe. Bacteria thrive in warm, moist places, so as long as you're not adding bacteria with dirty tools or giving them a nice place to set up shop (e.g. by adding sugar or chemicals that could disrupt the balance of good bacteria), you should be just fine.

I'd avoid the deodorant suggestion, though. There's evidence that the aluminum in antiperspirants can be harmful to our health, and you certainly don't want to put some of the nasty chemicals and fragrances most products contain on your freshly shaved areas with open pores. Hookers usually don't worry about living a long, healthy life anyway, so what good for them may very well be bad for you. If you're determined to use something, keep it natural and healthy, like a natural deodorant or crystal, a dusting of cornstarch (NEVER use baby/talcum powder near your pussy), tea tree or clove oil.
