Okay, let me set the scene for ya'll. As many of you know I just picked up a Mobile Home at an unbelievable price. Well part of this deal is we had to clean out all of the junk left behind.

Late this afternoon my wife and I piled up 11 large bags of assorted trash from the trailer in front of the house we're living in now. (Trash pick up is tomorrow morning.) Along with the bags of trash were assorted pieces of furniture. (One easy chair, one recliner, a dresser, two bedframes and several small tables.)

After piling all of this out front we headed downtown to do some food shopping. When we got back all of the furniture except one small plastic table was gone. (Hey if they can use it, great for them. I've been known to pick things up from the side of the road myself.)

What really got to me though was when I walked out front to set a cannister of well used Kitty Litter among the trash bags. All but 4 of the trash bags were just plain gone. WTF?

The only thing I can think of is someone looking for personal information, in which case they will be sadly disapointed. All of this came out of a traileer that has sat empty for the past two years. (Anything with even my name on it goes through a shredder, then hits a burn can out back.)

Oh well, at least the trash guys won't have to load as much when they hit my place tomorrow morning.

When I lived in a mre urban area I came to the conclusion that people will take just about anything left on the side of the road, lord only knows why. Just remember this to keep it all in perspective:

In your mind, picture how strange the average person is. Now remember, half of them are stranger than that.

Every now and then you hear about some guy who wants to be a cop but gets turned down. So what does Joe Looser do? Goes out and gets an old State Cruiser, buys some lights and a uniform and goes it solo. Eventualy they get caught, usually because they are stupid enough to pull over a real cop or something.

Do you think that some guy just reaaaally wanted to be a garbage man?

PMSL at the whole thing... :D
I obviously live in a too high status neighborhood. We have to do that with a garage sale.

(People actually pay you to haul away your junk. )

Our creepy neighbors have roving eyes for our trash pile. It's amazing. We do shred everything of any import, of course, but we also have to take pains to make the trash "safe" so if they take something they won't be injured.

Example - we had an older box fan that began to spark, nearly catching on fire. We tossed it, but first I yanked the cord from the thing. We were afraid they'd use it and wind up starting a fire.

And it's worse now, because we're using each weekly pickup as the means to toss all this junk that has been cluttering our garage.

Once the garage is clean, we can begin to toss all this junk that is currently cluttering our basement.

And move the rest to the garage.

And start all over again.

We live at the end of a backwater cul-de-sac that if someone comes by, we know they're lost. I put trash out on Wednesdays at 8 am and it's gone by 9. No window of opportunity.

Nice job of fishing, but I'm not telling you the day, the time, or the location.

Looking for personal information is one explanation. Sadly, some form of mental illness may be another. My boss has taken on cases of elderly people with hoarding problems, and one of them used to bring home other people's trash to search through. Only problem was, he would think everything in the bag was worth treasuring. *shudder*

Let's hope it was something as normal as identity thieves.

True. But what comes to mind for me is a little different. I'm thinking that, should I be driving by and see furniture that I might want, and pick it up, perhaps people much less fortunate might see the furniture, and wonder... Might there be clothes in some of those bags?

Just a thought.

Living in a college town we see a great deal of dumpster diving.

When the grand exodus of undergrads occurs in mid-May, there are piles of stuff by all the apartment dumpsters. It's amazing what they toss. Stereos, bookshelves, decent furniture . . . I'd be furious as a parent if my child, just because they didn't feel like moving some of their belongings, left them behind.

Of course, they also leave behind cats and dogs. That saddens me more than I can say. What type of person takes in a kitten or a puppy in September and then tosses it out in May? They don't give them away, they dump them, leaving them outside their duplexes or apartments.

There are many animals euthanized after the undergrads go home for the summer.

Be careful, Cat.

You may wind up with a herd of kitties like us.

I know someone who works for a dog rescue group. One of the dogs she has was found by the landlord of an apartment building. The people moved out and left the dog locked in the bathroom. It was in there for a couple weeks, when they found him the water in the toilet was completely gone and he was very sick

I'm glad to say that he is very happy, healthy, and well cared for now, but the story makes my blood boil.

This thread reminds me of that commercial, two guys driving around find a chair on the side of the curb and decide to pick it up. They continue driving with satisfied grins on their faces but eventually their noses start to wrinkle as they sniff. Next time you see the chair it is on the same curb again in the same place.
