Well, I don't know about heretic, but from my experience, people are pretty impressed when you tell them you're a writer. They perk with interest. Then you tell them what you write and they either really perk, get intimidated or go blank and say, "Oh."

maybe if you word it another way. like do you wear a hard hat? do you do heavy lifting? do you fix things or get real dirty and oily? are you good with your hands? can you phrase it in a macho way?

"skilled labourer" could maybe sound sexy. you have skills and you work hard.
