Do you believe that our federal laws should outlaw discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation in the workplace? Currently, federal law does not prohibit such discrimination. Thirteen states have added sexual orientation to their version of Title VII and various cities have created these requirements, but there is no national standard.

I personally think discriminating against someone because they are gay is absolutely unacceptable in an enlightened society.

Seeing as how you cannot even discriminate against that rotten employee who has a hangnail - damn them anyways...lousy workers - I don't see why any employer would even contemplate discrimination against someone cause of sexual preference.

Hell...even Catholic Schools in BC hire gay teachers.

I agree, but I say let the states deal with it. Decentralize.

The only thing that should be considered when hiring or firing someone is qualification, professionalism and performance. Period.

Yes, the federal law should be expanded to include sexual orientation.

I'm upset with all this reverse discrimination! As a straight man I can't even apply for a job at the GAP!

Yup. One of my teachers was gay. Loved him to death.

Here, when they ask you about yourself in an interview, they're not allowed to ask your SIN number, your sexual orientation, religious aphiliation or even your age, until you're hired. Why? Cus they're grounds for descrimination.

edited to add that when they hire you, they're not allowed to ask sexual orientation or religion (you can share it if you like, but they're not supposed to ask), but they obviously need your age and SIN.

I think its alright to sexually discriminate against people who like to fuck cantaloupes, watermelons, and various other fruit and vegetables.

Gay folks have the whole retail clothing industry pretty much sewn up.

I had a friend who worked at the GAP and said that the rumor about the name being an acronym for "Gay and Proud" wasn't just an urban legend.

LOL I'll assume you're kidding. I think the reason there are more gay men than straight in the clothing industry is simply that most gay men care more about clothing than most straight men.

Another lovely conspiracy theory to defunk.

In this thread lavender demonstares why she has been dubbed “The Duchess of Dork” by four out of every five Monarchs. Way to defend you’re title your majesty! :p

Not at Old Navy. Go inside a store and all you see are either teenagers or older folk supplementing their retirement income.

Actually, I'm not joking. I really have a friend who worked there and the GAP is refered to as the "Gay and Proud" store within their inner circle.

That would explain Abercrombie and Fitch.

Fair enough, gay guys and creepy old perverts.

I would like to see discrimination for any reason be a part of the law of the land.

The only things that should affect your working environment should be your work and hygiene. ( I had to throw the hygiene thing in because there is nothing worse than working next to someone who is ripe. :) )

I agree on a conditional basis. Simply that the person must declare their orientation during the employment process, or within some reasonable period of time thereafter.

Why? What would prevent a closet gay from seeking redress under this law even if the employer was unaware of their sexual orientation?

The declaration need not be public, nor mandantory. But without it I can see a great deal of 'wiggle' room for abuse.

The thought here is that if you are going to seek shelter under a law, you must make it known that you are entitled to the shelter.
