What are your favourite words to express the sounds your characters make? Which ones do you avoid?

I've used all of those for what people "say", plus grunt. For other areas, slurp, thud, slap, sloosh.

Yeah, those. "Fuu...cckk" gets an airing, the occasional "Uhnnh", "Ohhh," "Ahhh," "Mmmm," just long enough visual extensions to suggest a sound, not a word. But those stupid long vowel extensions some people insist on, they're a big no for me. If people make those noises, they might want to see a doctor, coz somethings about to break!

On top of the standards, my ladies coo, whimper, sometimes squeak. They will sigh in falsetto. My gents generally grunt and moan. Sometimes I'll just augment with an adverb (moan huskily etc). I mention a lot of heavy/hot breath, especially during dialogue. Sometimes I will mention a change in register (voice successively rises or suddenly lowers).

Now you know all of my secrets, dammit!

Pant, groan, pant and moan are my go to's.

A good "screamed" is also something I like when used sparingly, to show a particular moment of intense passion. Same with roared. The former is usually a female character while the latter a male.

I don't think there's any I can think of that I actively avoid. Just that different moments or scenes lean towards certain words being used or feeling out of place.

I tend to avoid writing vocalized sex sounds (such as moans or screams as opposed to gasps or pants) because I think of that as an exaggerated porn trope. A big part of this is that I personally don't make those sounds and neither have any of my lovers. For a long while I even suspected that no one naturally did this, and that the concept of sex vocalizations was invented for porn. Loud sex would likely even be problematic in real life because it risks your family, neighbors, etc. overhearing you, and having to restrain yourself from making too much noise would distract you from enjoying the sex.

That said, there have been a couple instances in my erotica when I did include a wordless vocalization at the moment of orgasm, in order to extend a sex scene that would otherwise seem too short in writing, especially if that character was also nonhuman (because nonhuman behaviors don't need to seem humanly plausible). And even I occasionally appreciate the function of a sex vocalization as an indicator that a character is at the height of pleasure.

'Mewled', however, has not been mentioned yet and I've used that one several times. 'Sobbed' as well. Probably my sadistic tendencies breaking through even during sweet lovemaking moments. In hindsight, I messed up by not using 'bleated' during my The Wolf and the Lamb story.
