my friend is having some serious problems with her roommates. between the three of them, there are two cats.. one of which is my friend's the other is one of the other girls'. the sad thing, the other cat is pretty much being starved to death. we can tell because of how much of his hair he is losing (its like a handful every time you touch him.. and we dont think that's a good sign). and that's not to mention that her place wreaks of cat shit since the cat is having diarreah (sp?) constantly since he isnt eating much, if at all. there are other things, but there are too many to keep on gong. me and her both want to get the cat out fo the place and put it somewhere else where we know it will get taken care of. we have a place in mind for it to go, the only problem is getting him out of the apartment without her roomies noticing until after its too late. she's moving out fo the apartment in a little over a week. does anyone have any ideas on how to get the cat out without the roomies knowing?

Two cats!

You seem to be describing a problem greater than just putting two cats together that don't get along, or two roommates in the same situation. If you have a cat that is not eating, ie. starving to death, and losing that much hair......
you have a sick pussy!

Get the cat to the vet, don't let it suffer!

Just have her come out and offer to take the cat.

If she cannot keep it,at least she could find it a better home.

Also call the shelter in her area and find out who to report this to. Anyone can call in without giving a name or number.

Is there the possibility that she may face some sort of retribution if she does something with the roommate's cat? Would the roommate do something to her cat?

If yes, wait until moving day and accidently "pack" the other cat and take it with her stuff. If this is the last she will likely see of the roommate that might be the easiest thing to do, as long as the cat can last a week.

Or, possibly be blunt and say, "You cat looks really fucked up. If you don't want it anymore I know someone who would like to try and nurse it back to health"

I'm guessing that the room mates keep their cats in seperate rooms? When I lived with my roomies they both footed the bill for the cat food and just set out one bowl.

I'd have a serious discussion with this person, they aren't responsible enough to care for this kitty. I'd lay it down like this. She either can't afford the cat, or she doesn't care. Either way, she needs to get rid of it, either an animal shelter or another home. I think she should take the action, it's her fuck up. Maybe she'll learn something.

If she refuses, or doesn't acknowledge the problem, and isn't willing to care for the animal, threaten to call a local animal shelter (or the spca?) . And do so if you don't see it going anywhere. She'll most likely get a fine, which she deserves.

I think kitty-napping should be a last resort.

Tell the roommate to take the cat when she moves, and feign that it must have escaped when the door was left open during the move. Unless the cat is pedigreed, the law considers it worth zip, so the roommate can't get any money out of your friend for the "mistake."

In the meantime, any chance you guys can supplement the cat's diet? The poor thing sounds really ill.

If you can get the cat to a Vet and have it declared malnourished you have a legal leg to stand on for abducting the cat.

Keep the cats seperate in case it is a disease rather than a dysfunctional thing.
One way or another,it needs to be seen ASAP!
If the cats are treated this way,it's no wonder there are other problems here!:( GOOD LUCK!:rose:

see.. there's a complication to calling people in. where they live, pets are illegal (except for fish) but they have them anyway.

as for the cats getting along, they do just fine. they play with each other, although not as much as they used to. the older one (more commonly, the big cat) hasnt been eating lately and we can tell. we think its because he just doesnt get fed since he eats the little one's food when given the chance. the three roomies arent exactly speaking to each other and if she offers to take the cat, they'll tell (assuming they'll speak to her) her that she cant do that because its their cat. and she's spoken up some and said things about the litter box cuz the apartment (except for her room) seriously wreaks of catshit. its enough to make you feel extremely nauseous as soon as you walk in the door.

the cat has been to the vet about 2 months ago because he had such bad diarreah that he had blood in his stool. the really strange thing is that the vet said to keep him on a cottage cheese and rice diet for awhile (no specified time) and the cat has been starving since then even though he has regular food now. the vet they take the big cat to is really bad, at least in terms of cats and other small animals like that.

she's planning to find a way to get him out when she moves out, and she's intending to feed him as much as she can the next week because he is so hungry (she lets him eat the little one's food whenever she can but the roomies pull him away when they notice he's in her room). and she's planning to take the cat to a barn where there's other cats, horses, and other animals (not many), but she at least knows that he'll get fed there as well as everything else he needs. there's people there all the time (except overnight) and she knows them, so she knows that he'll get taken care of. its just the problem of getting him out. we're thinking of packing him up, but they may notice that and we're trying to think of something else that would work just in case.

and so everyone knows, there is nothing wrong with the little one. he's just fine, well fed, and his litter gets cleaned/changed rather frequently, as well as bathed, his claws clipped, and played with daily.

Best bet would likely be to get a second cat carrier, one of the Sherpa bags, which looks like a regular suit case. When you're carrying it out to the car, just drape your jacket over it (it looks casual enough) and proceed calmly. If they do catch her, tell her to go balls out. You said it was illegal for them to have this cat? Well, tell them if they don't allow her to take that cat some place where it can get the proper care, she'll report them to not only the manager (From what you say, they stand to loose their deposites, and get kicked out, if the stench is That bad) and the ASPCA. With the barn, make sure these people understand this cat has been starved, and has mainly been an indoor cat. Good Luck!

Tapeworms, possibly?

Okay, the usual explaination when a cat has the squirts and blood in the stool is tapeworms. Have you seen any little bits of worm "segments" hanging out of the cat's butt lately (sorry for the mental image, people, but seriously) When a feline (or any other animal for that matter) has diarrhea you've got to make sure it has water available at all time. Certain kinds of worms can cause a cat to lose weight, and as for the hair falling out, one of my cat's had a similar problem but once I got him eating regularly it all grew back. Rice in a cats diet...this is a common thing for their stomach problems, but I've only ever mixed it with boiled eggs...hard to get the cats to realize it's food, though!
As for having cats in a place that doesn't allow them, do you approve of this? I think that a landlord has the right to say "Please don't bring animals in to my unit." are these indoor cats or outdoor/indoor cats? While I don't know about straight out abducting the animal, a serious talking to is definatly in order. I hope your friend goes through with that part.
And if it is tapeworms, the other cat might catch/have them too, so keep an eye out. course, could be that I don't really know what I'm talking about and am just babbling on, but that's always a posibility, right?

Chicklet

thanks Chicklet... and everyone else too.. he's hopefully going to the vet soon (i'm telling my friend all this stuff) and then i think she's still going to take him to the barn. he will get much better care there then he'll get where he's at

as for the illegal cat though Chicklet, it is a landlords right to say he doesnt want pets, but he said he doesnt want pets for certain people. and my friend was rather put out by that when she found out. these are indoor cats and up until recently both were taken care of very well. they havent done any damage to anything in the place (except for the smell now). and i know that one is for sure leaving next saturday... and quite possibly both of them

Does the cat ever go outside? I would just kidnap it in the middle of the night, and say he ran away.

Or, punch the roomies in the fucking teeth, take the cat and be on my way! :D

Screw trying to tippy-toe around the insensitive roomie. She doesn't deserve to have a cat anyway. As a pre-vet I feel very strongly that anyone who can see an animal that obviously has something wrong with it and doesn't take it to the vet should be reported to animal cruelty. If your child had an ear infection and was running around with pus and blood spilling from its ear you wouldn't ignore that. Cats aren't people but they do have feelings!!

Take the cat to a vet. Don't just kidnap it and drop it off at a barn. It's obviously ill, in addition to not eating, and no one deserves to have that dumped on them if they have other pets.

There's got to be a time that not everyone is home. It takes two minutes to grab the cat, put it in the car and go. I took a dog and a cat when i left a house i was renting. The dog was nearly starved, and the kitten was so ill, he could barely walk. I found the dog a home right away, and spent over $200 on the kitten before he was healthy again.

I admire you for wanting to rescue the cat. Just be prepared for it not being as easy as finding it a home.

It definitely sounds like the cat has worms. It can spread to other cats if not treated ASAP. The cat will die without treatment. The treatment is very simple. Purchase a pill from the vet for $8 dollars and give it to the cat, it might take two people to do it. Be sure and wash your hands afterwards.
