I will be attending a teachers' convention in Charlotte the last week of April. Does anyone have any suggestions for good restaurants? And I don't mean that they have to be any kind of high-end foodie snob, by any means. We like BBQ as much as the next folk.

Can't provide any guidance about Charlotte...but if you have the time I HIGHLY suggest taking any extra day and going up to Asheville and then up the Blue Ridge Parkway.

It's breathe taking in spring.:)

I know a couple from Charlotte that I could ask, but I don't really trust their judgement in this. When they visit Savannah they eat at chain restaurants.

You might want to check out a site called Roadfood.com and see what pops up, or even Citisearch.

I ditto Asheville and the Blue Ridge in springtime, if you have time for a day trip. Watch out for bears.

Oops.

Sorry.

Staying downtown? You might find your way over to the 4th Ward. I haven't been there for years, but both my brothers were there two years ago. They say downtown Charlotte, and the ward, have been redone into a very cool night scene.

Sending you a PM!

The best place to eat near Charlotte: MY house!

For chicken fried steak, chicken and dumplings, fried okra, squash casserole, butter peas, silver queen corn, homemade biscuits, etc. no one does better than a southern gal taught in the kitchen by her granny!

Roadfood is food porn.

Indeed it is. I love the pictures of meals and desserts that the members send in from all the little dives and diners around the country. For a long time, my now dog-eared paperback copy was always in my travel bag. Now I make more use of the online site, which is much more comprehensive. Many of my best meals ever were in Roadfood places. [/hijack]

LMAO that is the one nice thing about here in Norfolk, BPS is a few minutes away and Gander Mountain is within relative driving distance.

If you're staying "Uptown"...stick to Tryon St. There are many upscale restaurants like Ruths Chris...Capital Grille, but my favorite place uptown to eat , drink and be merry is Ri_Ra Irish pub.

True there is a 6+ block section of Tryon that is very nice. Bars, Pubs, food ... :D

Do you have a photo of this item? Really... is it worth the detour?

My even more favoritest travel book is/was "Roadside America." Best places to see rocks shaped like presidents, etc. The website is fine, but I'll always regret giving away the paperback. (Photo caption: "Parrot Jungle proves that if cockatoos had invented rollerskates man would not have evolved.")

I left Savannah as soon as I read this. Should be arriving at your house in about twenty minutes.

Here is the feedback I got from a friend who now lives in Charlotte. He asks for more specifics about which section if you want any other ideas:

"Downtown Charlotte there is a chefs college that runs a gourmet pizza place called pie town which is pretty good. Penguins is also down that way. BBQ wise Sticky fingers is good. There is also an authentic hole-in-the-wall ethiopian place called red sea that has good food"

Damned straight Sticky Fingers is good! We ate at the original in Chattanooga. They put six different BBQ sauces on the table for you to use. Yum!

Anyway, noted, copied and to be handed out tomorrow. Thanx!

But the dry rub ribs! MMMmmmmm.

If you're going with sauce, I like a mixture of the sweet and hot.

You've received lots of ideas, including an offer of home cooking!

When you get back, why don't you add a little blurb in here about your experiences there?
