The is a real inscription that I just had to include in a story. A GRATEFUL CITY ERECTED THIS SHAFT TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORIES OF ITS BRONX COUNTY SONS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WAR.

One of the characters looking at says, "Did the mason call the sponsors and ask, 'are you sure you guys want this stuff about erecting a shaft?' "

See Bramble's post above - accurate on the year and the inscription. It's a sewer ventilation pipe, not a war memorial.

Understandable guess though - I thought "war memorial" the first time I saw it too, and plenty of towns in Australia have similar-looking memorials.
