Funny you brought this up again Avery as the movie is in heavy rotation on cable. i've watched it many times by now and something else popped out at me that i think i missed before.
The last scene shows her sitting on the porch waving a seemingly straight-laced James Spader off to work. There is a cut away to this idyllic neighborhood and the audience can hear children laughing and playing in the street. The sun is shining and it is the Jones' perfect block. The camera cuts back to Lee and she is just staring at you (the audience) and the silent message is this: "What i am and what we do is just as normal as anything else. There is no shining stamp of freak on my forehead and we (the so-called freaks) are among you. We might even be Mrs. Thompson who runs the bake-sale, but walks around with a plug inside her that is only to be removed by Mr. Thompson after dinner is over. Yeah. Think on that."
