Searching for a gay community

Ok, so Hubby and I are looking for a winter place in North Carolina because his parents (and possibly mine) are retiring there.

Neither of us know much about the south, but we do know that we tend to enjoy living in or in close vicinity to gay communities. My brother and his partner will visit all the time, and we'd like to live in a place where they weren't glared at.

Also we require good coffee shops and clothing stores so...

Anyone know anything about the state?

I think it would depend on where in North Carolina you're going. I know Charlotte has a pretty good gay community, along with Raleigh. But this is the south we're talking about, so more rural areas of the state might be distinctly unfriendly.

I would say that the most gay friendly part of the state is the Durham- Chapel Hill area. Or at least it was when I was a young Dukie.

Asheville seems to be very gay-friendly - beautiful area, too.

That's exactly what we thought. lol That's why we're looking there. Anytime you have a university in the area things tend to be more...better.
