Starting this thread for those who would like to understand how to use the search fuction better or have a question about what one of the feature of the search function does.

It is a bit fustrating and dificult at times to use the search feature, I figure a thread like this might be of some use to those who "really have" a desire to learn how to find the things you are looking for.

Also it might be a good thread if you are currently looking for something and can't find it, you can post here and someone may chip in and help you find it.

I will be creating some step by step pics tutorials as time permits...in order to help explain some of the functions. Anyone else who would like to contribute in despensing usable knowledge in helping others are welcome to do so.

Good idea RJ that search function can be a real pain in the booty :D

I don't know how the phpBB's search function works, hopefully it's better than the main site's search function, which always foils my attempts to search for more than one word.
Not that I've ever had problems using the forum's search, the advanced search seems quite straightforward.

I am looking for a 66 Fairlane GTA with a 390 and a c-6 transmission.

Its not not knowing how to search darling its that the damned thing works only when it wants to.

Perhaps its my persuasive personality then. I never seem to have much problems finding what I need and it is always willing to obey my requests.

Sometimes I may have to tweak something and repeat the request, and it does make me wait 20 secs before I can make another search again, but it always works for me.

So I don't mind helping someone find something if they post a request to this thread. However in putting forth the effort to of help, I don't want to just hand out fish, I would rather teach people to fish.

What I learned from experience:
The search function doesn't allow you to search for anything with 3 letters or less (so it's difficult to find the 'YAY' threads, the title is too short)

Other than that, I usually can find threads if I know the title.

I have a problem using it to gather information. Like when I started the punishment thread, I wanted to search if this question was done before. Yes, I know there's the library, and I was too dense to check under discipline. But still there are more threads on punishment, and posts on punishment are 'hidden' in other threads. Searching for punishment gave an insane amount of threads.
So do you have any hints how to do a search where the results are usable? Can you search for more words? Do these have to be in the right order?

Great idea for a thread, RJ. :rose:

Thank you for your comments and for your questions.

Can you use more than one word? Hints for making results more usable.

The answer is yes you can use more than one word, and by doing so you will narrow your results signifigantly. Here is an example you can try and see for yourself.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y266/eqoaseveredamage/results1.gif

In the above example I used two words as I am interested in learning the differences between punishment and discipline. So I use these two words with a space between them. Notice that I selected search "entire posts" and I choose to display the results as "Posts"

If you do a search with the exact settings above you will get approx 314 posts...hmmthats 25 pages to go through, not too bad but may be more than you want...so I add a third word in "bondage" As I want to know if bondage is use in forms of punishment or discipline.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y266/eqoaseveredamage/results2.gif

Results is aprox 16.

Notice the 3 red arrows in this second search. You can try to do the same search and just switch these settings. When you do, notice the differences in the results you get.

When ever doing any kind of search, you should first think of 2 main key words and maybe a list of 5-10 key words which you would associate with the two main key words. Then do searches with the two main key words and then narrow your reults further using the associated words.

Try the above two search settings examples and note the differences and let me know if that will help.

PS: Note that I do have BDSM TALK section selected, but DO NOT have the search child forums box checked. That is because if I only want the discussions from the TALK section not the CAFE.

Also Order of keywords do not effect the search results from what I have seen.

bondage punishment discipline
discipline punishment bondage
punishment discipline bondage

all produce 16 posts as a result using the settings in the above two examples

I've got just the car for ya!

Call me at 1-800-IGottaV8 (and that's no joke or juice, I really do.)

LOL

I'd like to find the "Pervy Poetry Slam"

I also want to find a thread where I told some girl about the "Fonjika"

I need more information to find this post about Fonjika

Do you have any guesses in which forum the post was made in...the GB? BDSM Cafe?

Also a guess to how long ago you made it? Over a year? two? DOn't need exact but a good guess would help.

Also, are you sure that you remember how it is spelled? Are there other possible spellings of this word...if so please list them.

Thanks.

Why doesn't it work when you leave the search field to say "Search Thread Titles"?

I'm fairly positive that's how it is spelled. The thread was in one of the BDSM forums.

Can't remember how long ago it was, but it was a while. At least a year, I'd guess.

Because the search function sucks...next question...lol

Also the only results that come up for this word Fonjika and how it is spelled is this thread here.

I searched all the posts you have made page by page in conjunction with my borwser fucntion on to find word...firefox has this feature by the way...I did a search through your posts from 1 year and older and from 1 month and older.

The search results only produce 20 pages of results before it truncates, so this is the reason I did a search on both time frames in order to catch the 20 page from today and back and from 20 pages and back from a year ago.

Since I could not find it, it means to me that either it is beyond the 20 page search results going back from a year ago....hence it cannot be retrieved...or the spelling of it is wrong.

I may be missing something, but not for lack of effort. I will try one other search and let you know if I find anything from it.

Google does a fine job at crawling Lit and if I cannot find what I am looking for with the search here I will use google's advance search function and specify www.literotica.com as the domain for google to search and then search for the word you listed.

as you can see even the behemoth of all search engines could not find it either, so I am guessing that it must be spelled differently.

What was the phrse or context in which you remember using the word.

perhaps if you cannot find this word, you might be able to find it through a phrase you know would be associated with it.

I just used the same search method to do a search for "bongcheeba" which was in the same post, and still can't find it. I also found "bongcheeba" using a Lit search, in another thread, so I can only guess that the google method is imperfect.
