Is the Roman Catholic Church a totally evil and despicable organization, or what? American Catholics should leave the church in droves, and form a new church, with democratically elected leadership accountable to the rank and file.

Four hundred protesters marched in Boston today, demanding Cardinal Bernard Law's resignation. He, in turn, hid out to avoid them. There have been calls for his resignation for months, but now even priests are calling for him to reisgn.

Just released documents reveal church officials covered up a whole range of misconduct by priests, not just diddling young boys. One priest beat his housekeeper. Another traded cocaine for sex. My favorite is (get this) a priest who told teenagers training to be nuns he was the second coming (cumming?) of Christ, in order to get them to have sex with him. (I can just see it now: "I'm God-- blow me!") What a bunch of scumbags Catholic priests are! There's nothing wrong with being sexual, but being hypocritical about it is totally nauseating.

On top of all that, it looks like the Boston archdiocese will file bankruptcy, to get out of paying abuse victims, a move which will further infuriate people. The church has consistently shown it cares nothing about all the people it victimized and whose lives it ruined. All it cares about is protecting itself, and the power and prestige of the church hierarchy.

What's that saying about "hanging the last bureaucrat with the entrails of the last priest"?

The New York Observer, a paper that is as witty as it is (frequently) misguided (although never, of course, when Rick Brookhiser is contributing) has a special edition out to celebrate fifteen years in business (if there's a link to the anniversary items I am too incompetent to find it). This splendidly sour little gem from 1996 deserves repetition. The author is Jim Windolf.

See Daddy crack dirty jokes with the man at the next desk. See Daddy gossip. See Daddy fawn before his superiors. After Take Our Daughters To Work Day 1996, Jennifers all over the city went home with a sad realization: Daddy is kind of a jerk".

Women have just started entering the workforce in comparable numbers to men within the last generation, hence girls did not have the same role models as their brothers. Dad went to work. Mom stayed at home. The Take Your Daughters to Work Day started as an attempt to introduce girls to the workforce, to see a multiude of women working outside the home. Today in most workplaces, the day has changed to Take Your Child To Work.

But whenever the Catholic Church is brought up in a thread or in conversation in public, I make it a point to point(redundant?) out the fairly well documented fact that the Vatican is the "Proud" owner of the second largest collection of pornographic materials on the face of the Earth.

The present climate and issues with the Church not withstanding, thats pretty neat.

The Kinsey Institute has the Largest.

But the one that really wins the "Look after the Lads" award is the revision of sins . . . which excluded priestly pederasty of pimply parishioners from the list . . . I mean, there have gotta be SOME perks in a notionally celibate world . . .

But then, celibacy was a recent addition to Roman teachings only dating from Tudor times when the wealth of the church was controlled by Abbots having numerous off-spring and the body of clerics wanted to protect their joint ownership of the Abbey in days when the common law vested ownership in the Abbot only . . . who could bequeath that monastery property to his children . . . without accountability to the Order . . . pre-dates incorporation . . .

I'm Catholic, and think Bernard Law should be defrocked and imprisoned. I also think the Church should, in some form or another, pay every dime they're ordered to for past abuses. Perhaps they can sell off their land or melt down some of the gold in their ornate cathedrals.

Apologies are nice, but forgiveness is meaningless without true contrition and humility.
