There has never been a nation of Palestine. The British called their colony in the Levant "Palestine" to erase the existence of the the indigenous Jews. When Israel won its independence from the British in 1948, its Arab neighbors immediately expelled their Jews. These refugees were taken in by the Jews already living in Israel and began building the modern state.
