I'm for a constitutional amendment that would define flag-burning as a statement of dissent by one man and one woman. Threesomes would be allowed, but only if there were two flags.

Ok. I'll bite.

Would the flags have to be the US Flag?

That would have to be left up to the dissenting couple. To mandate the type of flag would interfere with personal liberty, and make a mockery of everything the flag represents.

Communist!

I need to clear up something here...are you call me a commuinist?

:D

Thanks shereads. Just the giggle I needed.

Would using flags as bed sheets and then having wild monkey sex on them count as desecration?

Not that I've ever done such a thing, of course. ;)

Monkey flags can be used for just about any purpose without offending anyone. Monkeys are usually too busy having sex to care.

I've always wanted to call someone a communist. It wasn't personal.

Ok then, as long as it wasn't personal.

Atheist!

Agnostic, actually. Confirmed atheists seem to take the non-existence of God on faith, and they can be so zealous about it. It's like a religion.

*snort* Hot tea and toasted muffin crumbs. Dangerous.

I'd love to spend 5 minutes inside your brain, I'm sure it would be a hoot. But I don't think I could cope with more than that.

English Flag

As someone else has pointed out, the English are the only team that WAS in the World Cup football contest that is NOT a nation state. We are part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and our National Flag is the Union Flag.

What has been done to the English Flag, the Cross of St George, during the last few weeks has been amazing. It has appeared on almost every type of consumer product, on food and drink, on cars, houses and almost every body part.

Burning the English Flag is not a crime, or even a misdemeanor. Wearing it as a bra or panties is perfectly acceptable. I have even seen English Flag toilet paper for sale. Wiping your backside with the Cross of St George MIGHT be patriotic... Or not?

Despite our exit from the World Cup, the English Flag is still visible everywhere.

Some people get really touchy about their symbols. Almost idolatry.

The interesting contradiction with the US flag is that it's highly upsetting to some to burn it as a protest (althought that is the way one is supposed to dispose of worn or damaged flags), but it's ok to have them lying alongside the road, all tattered and dirty, where they fell off someone's car. Those stupid car flag displays drop flags like trees drop leaves in autumn, and the street sweeper picks them up if they get picked up at all.

Which brings the whole flag burning thing into question. It's just a piece of fabric, really. That it means anything at all is completely inside one's head.

Personally, I want a monkey flag.

Ah, that good a fellow agnostic! Yes, I agree, Atheists can be so fanatical about their non-religious believes.

If the belief there is no God is followed fanatically, isn't that a religion in itself?

MFM burning flags while playing violent video games would get my vote.

Oh yes!
It is not a desceration to let the Grand Ol Rag hang on an overpass until it is tattered and torn like an over used snot-rag...so that isn't the problem...

the problem is the "statement" of disapproval of the government...and I've heard people (otherwise rational folks seemingly) suggest that the punishment for burning the flag should be to burn the dastardly protester!

Nothing out of proportion here?

Thongs, especially low-rise thongs, are definitely an inappropriate use of one's national flag. So are 'wife-beater' undershirts. I'm undecided about men's briefs and neckties. Lapel pins are okay.

I value free expression as much as anyone, Og. But I can no longer tolerate the near-epidemic of flag-burning that took place in America during the 1960's. Enough is enough. Old Glory = freedom. People who hate freedom should be silenced.

I hope congressional Republicans and President Bush will continue to stand firm on this issue and not let so-called 'urgent' issues get in the way. The flag is forever. Iraq, who knows?

But do we have to call them flags?

Shouldn't they be called "alternative national banners?"

And I approve of monkey sex, and I like the idea of monkey bedsheet flags, except that most of the monkey bedsheet flags are already covered in monkey-flung poo.

no- the word atheist means- NO belief in god.

Of course, if one were able to PROVE the existance of a god, one would willingly agree that it exists.But- that's not belief. That's knowledge, empirical, and replicatible.

In the ten thousand years of our existance, there has never been any proof that a god or a prime creator of any sort exists. On the other hand, once we started our search for the Big Bang, it showed up pretty quickly. And it's verifiable. You need some knowledge of scientific method to understand it, but if children spent as much time learning about science as they do in Sunday School, the misconceptions about science wouldn't be so widespread....

But all this should be a different thread- sorry for the hijack! ;)

Mmmm...isn't that what I said?

I am an atheist, by the way- not an agnostic. ;)

Small clarification, atheist is not just the absence of belief. Belief that God does NOT exist.

Agnostic isn't sure.

It may have been in the form of a question but I have no doubt that Atheists do not belive in God.

Sooo...an atheist is an agnostic with a belief system?
