Spare a thought for her partner of the last 27 years, Dr. Tam O'Shaughnessy. They worked together, wrote books together, spent more than a quarter-century together, but Dr. O'Shaughnessy is not deemed worthy of the federal benefits that other astronauts' widows receive.
And why is her partner not deemed worthy?
See edit, she thought children were more important.
And why is her partner not deemed worthy?
They were both women. A will won't help all things as Ms. O'Shaughnessy will find their estate will be taxed a rates well in excess to those which would exist for similarly situated straight couple. She is also not allowed to collect any of Ride's pension. Thanks to the Defense of Marriage Act the federal government is not allowed to recognize her as Ms. Ride's widow. According to federal law they were nothing but roommates.
Spoken as if these people were idiots and unaware of the consequences of their decisions.
Perhaps they, counter to the new paradigm, thought that defining one's life in terms of sexual orientation was 'tacky' and demeaning.
Who knows, they may have been right.
