Sally Ride dead at 61; First American woman in space succumbs to cancer

:rose:

I think most of the people in this thread are around my age so they actually remember the whole thing. It was a big deal and she was hero to women everywhere.

:( Ms Ride was an inspiration to those of us who remember her historic ride into space. I always thought Sally Ride was an appropriate and cool name for her.

Of course, she died of cancer, before I even opened this thread I figured it was cancer.

EVERYONE dies form cancer.

Cancer has become a giant money-making scam.

Spare a thought for her partner of the last 27 years, Dr. Tam O'Shaughnessy. They worked together, wrote books together, spent more than a quarter-century together, but Dr. O'Shaughnessy is not deemed worthy of the federal benefits that other astronauts' widows receive.

And why is her partner not deemed worthy?

Both are females. ;)

But that desire for privacy, Bear said, is what kept Sally from taking a stand on gay rights.

"We all have our dreams and wishes, and that might be yours or mine, but she's just like, you probably dont know what her politics are either. It's a family matter," Bear said. "That wasn't her battle of choice -- the battle of choice was science education for kids. And I just hope that all the different components of Sally's life go towards helping kids."

See edit, she thought children were more important.

I did after I posted. She was a wonderful person who made her fair share of sacrifices. I suppose she had a tough line to walk in choosing not to go public with being gay. She was definitely a trailblazer. Like one of the posters said in that link - She represented everything America can be proud of.

They were both women. A will won't help all things as Ms. O'Shaughnessy will find their estate will be taxed a rates well in excess to those which would exist for similarly situated straight couple. She is also not allowed to collect any of Ride's pension. Thanks to the Defense of Marriage Act the federal government is not allowed to recognize her as Ms. Ride's widow. According to federal law they were nothing but roommates.

Spoken as if these people were idiots and unaware of the consequences of their decisions.

Perhaps they, counter to the new paradigm, thought that defining one's life in terms of sexual orientation was 'tacky' and demeaning.

Who knows, they may have been right.

Yes, Fishmeal. They decided to be lesbians together, instead of being heterosexual like good Americans.

You totally nailed it.
