What're they going to do with this particular political hot potato?

If they put him on trial, Saddam's sure to link the US to his crimes against humanity (Reagen gave him the nerve gas he used against the Kurds. That's not speculation, it's a matter of record.) Rumsfeld's visit to Baghdad in '88 to declare US support for Saddam will come out, as will the fact that we gave him military intelligence during the Iran-Iraq war, though we declared ourselves neutral in that conflict.

My bet is that they'll set up a show trial in Baghdad where they'll rig the trial in order to make him keep his mouth shut, then they'll execute him. I also bet that it won;t happen till after the US election anyhow.

I would lean more towards a war crimes tribunal on the Nuremberg model. Where the defendant may not question or implicate the allies as part of his defense. Most likely it will be orchestrated by us, but we will turn him over to provisional government of Iraq & let them do the dirty work.

I'd rather make him work in the Hussein's Kebab shop for 16 hours a day for the rest of his life.

Typical liberal propoganda. Reagan didn't give Saddam any weapons. He sold them.

Socialist!

My guess is, he's been lobotomized already and we're just waiting for the hair to regrow over the scar.

I admit that for purely practical reasons, I would simply like to see him have a fatal "accident" in captivity. Some lunatics would still make him a martyr, but at least we would have a public spectacle and the risk of a real terrorist action in Iraq.

The Army guys should've just tossed that incendiary grenade down his rabbit hole.

But they didn't, so he'll get a real trial, but it'll probably be closed to media, so we won't hear him talk about the bio weapons the US gave him to use on Iran.

You must know we'll lose what little credibility we have left if Saddam dies before a public trial. There won't just be a few lunatics who make him a martyr; there will be millions of people all over the world, including moderates who have tried to give us the benefit of the doubt, who will no longer trust the U.S. or Britain (or our other key ally in the Coalition of the Willing, Croatia) to valet-park their cars, much less lead the world in taking a stand.

WHich is why I don't understand the reaction to the question, "How did you know he had weapons of mass destruction?"

Surely, as has been pointed out before, the answer is, "We kept the receipts."

I would, as I'm sure will come as no surprise, like to see Saddam, Sharon and Bush all dragged in chains to the Hague--and shortly thereafter swinging from a transom built for three.

It's probably my whacko leftist paranoia speaking but I don't really feel like we're going to put Saddam on trial any time soon. Our current system of government is really into anti-muslim style quasi-justice and removing things from the world's eye. I think he'll just go unmentioned and disappear off the radar, perhaps joining the lucky fellows at Guantanamo Bay. That's what'll probably happen unless the UN really pressures us to cough him up for a fair Nuremburg style trial.

I mean if we honestly wanted real genuine justice, wouldn't we have put him on trial already?

Not to change the subject, but I spent a few weeks with my friends looking for our dead other friends @ ground zero.........I want OSAMA BIN LADEN.........9-11 still burns.....never forgive/never forget.

A Nuremberg style trial is hardly fair. The defendant is denied making statements or subpenaing evidence of allied complicity in his crime. He is also denied the defense of you do the same damned thing. He may defend himself only on the basis of what he did and why. Only Donetiz was allowed to cop a plea of you did the same thing and that was only because two very courageous men, Chester W. Nimitz (CINCPAC) and His British equivilent, both of whom sent letters to Nuremberg stateing the US & UK had both practiced unrestricted submarine warfare from the first day of the war.

That he used gas will probably come out. Where he got the gas won't be allowed. A Nuremberg style trial is really a very safe way to handle Saddam, but it is hardly fair.

Agreed. I'm guessing he'll turn up suddenly towards the end of October.
