If we let Ukraine into NATO, that means the U.S., and the whole rest of the alliance, can't stand aloof any more -- next time Russia attacks Ukraine, we're obliged by treaty to fight.

What does Putin actually want out of this? Is there any part of Ukraine he covets, that he does not already have?

He wants the West to agree to conditions that would allow him to re-establish the Soviet Union. It isn't going to happen.

As we speak, pay attention to any Russian-generated propaganda that guerilla forces in east Ukraine are threatening Russian-speaking populations there. If you hear that claim from Putin or the Russian press, it will signal a Russian ground assault is imminent.
