Russia is right: The West promised not to enlarge NATO & these promises were broken

Sounds like they're only Russian because the Chinese Emperors never thought they were worth the trouble to annex.

It's quite a distance from China. Trough very harsh, often predominantly mountainous forests.

I notice nobody is defending the OP's position, that the West promised not to enlarge NATO.

Russia promised lots of crap they went back on. If Ukraine wants into NATO, then we let them into NATO

Putin uses shit like that to con people like you and the OP.

If we let Ukraine into NATO, that means the U.S., and the whole rest of the alliance, can't stand aloof any more -- next time Russia attacks Ukraine, we're obliged by treaty to fight.

But I thought Russia was no big deal...¯\(°_o)/¯

What does Putin actually want out of this? Is there any part of Ukraine he covets, that he does not already have?

He wants the West to agree to conditions that would allow him to re-establish the Soviet Union. It isn't going to happen.

As we speak, pay attention to any Russian-generated propaganda that guerilla forces in east Ukraine are threatening Russian-speaking populations there. If you hear that claim from Putin or the Russian press, it will signal a Russian ground assault is imminent.

Putin is using Hitler's 1938 Sudetenland logic. If a part of another country mainly speaks Russian, they should be part of Russia, and then when they are, so should the whole country.

If he gets his way in Ukraine, his next target would be the Balkan states and Poland, using the same argument that there is an 'oppressed' (by Putin's terms) minority of Russian speakers.

Gee? Who had a Russian spy ask him a question right in front of the whole nation?
Yes.. Putin still employs spies just like the good ol’ KGB days.

And other authoritarians will do the same !
Erdogan for example
