Runners unite

Yes I agree - and in a similar vein I wouldn’t go crazy with finding the perfect new shoes - something comfortable that is enough to get you enjoying it and motivated again should do the trick. I tend to find out what the latest running shoe trends are a couple of years later, when I’m buying them all at a significant discount :D
The best part of being out of it for so long is even the most pedestrian shoes are a huuuuge upgrade.

Jeff Galloway has some good books for anyone from beginner to experienced that have some great programs for starting off. I used his program for training for my first marathon. His 5k-10k book might be a good one to start with. As mentioned, try some shoes out. I've found myself going back to pretty basic ones for training and can usually find some great sales. I have found if they feel really cushy walking around the store, they will be too soft/dead feeling when running. I have recently tried some of the newer design shoes and really like the Adidas EVO SL for racing or fast training runs. Other brands all have similar shoes so when you get to that point tryout a bunch.
I ended up with some ASICS that have nice cushioning but you still feel the ground and aren’t floating around above it. Seems like a good compromise so far.

Thanks for the book recommendation! I’ll check it out

Okay former runner slowly getting back into it. Any advice for picking it up again many years later? For perspective the new running shoes are completely foreign to me. It’s been that long.
If there's a good running store nearby, I think it'd be worth your time to go in for a proper fitting. One of the things that's both great and tricky about the explosion of shoe choices is that not all of them are the same. The differences between brands and models can be small but crucial. Thus it is all the more important you find one that fits your feet as well as possible.

Hi folks.

Haven’t posted on this thread for ages. It’s one of my favourites - there’s a range of experience and abilities and everyone is so supportive and encouraging. It makes a great change from some of the threads here!

Have 2 big runs in the next few weeks - a hilly 10 mile in Dublin this Saturday (16th) and a half marathon in the South East on Sat 30th.

I have enough training done to finish but not sure about getting a PB on either. I’d like to get to 1hr 45 in the half marathon but that pace is probably a bit too fast to hold for 21km.

Anyway - take care and stay safe out there.

I have to apologize for my disappearance. I have been in away from Lit and away from running for months. Things are difficult right now and i haven't been able to convince myself to get out and run. I'm glad to see that the therad is picking up and that people are actually engaging. The whole idea was to get people moving and to connect with like-minded individuals, to show support and encourage a healthy lifestyle that it is so beneficial and needed at this moment. No matter where we look, everybody seems to be going thru a tough time. And reading your posts again reminded me of the reason why we run.

I personally don't know any of you, but today i thank you.

Every word of encouragement, every advice about shoes, or fuel, or hydration or motivation... that is what makes the difference. We want everybody to BE better, to FEEL better.

So kids, the word of the day is EMPATHY. We need a lot of that right now.

May the Force be with you

Hi All,

Just joined Lit today for the stories, buy found the forum this evening and scanning the threads and this one popped up which threw me based on 99% of the thread topics.

I’m an avid run in the UK, mostly trails to mix my love of running and being out in nature away down the hubbub of daily life.

Currently planning my 2026 event ‘want to do’ race calendar. I don’t race to race, I’m not competitive anymore, I like races to be part of cool communities as well as running interesting and great routes as well as challenge myself.

Planning on doing my first 50K next year and doing it on trails and travelling more to do races and trail weekends.

Feel free to say hi :)

welcome to the group. A 50K sounds terrifying. That's awesome! Keep us posted

Hi all, new to the group. I’ve run lots of half marathons but never the full kahuna. Training for a half in December and a full in March, both in South Texas. Balancing running and cycling and other cross training to ramp up my fitness level without injuries flaring up.

As we head into winter, does anyone have cold weather gear recommendations?
In particular, I've yet to find a pair of running gloves that keeps my fingers warm from the start. (Once I've run a couple miles and my hands are sweaty, my fingers are warm but until then they're ice cold.)

Same issue

I usually wear the thin running gloves under heavy winter gloves then just take the big ones off and stash them. Not the most convenient but it's what I do 🤷‍♂️

Sometimes in outdoor adventure races I'll just literally hold hand warmers in my fists until I warm up too

I saw the local Costco has some thin pants and shirt that are especially meant for warmth. I bought some a few years ago and they are incredibly warm.

I'm an avid xc skier, runner and cyclist so get lots of time in the cold and wet. For normal chilly days I'll usually wear some Smartwool fingered gloves. If colder or wet I have some very light waterproof shell mitts I can wear over them. If really cold or even xc skiing I'll use something like the Swix Lobster gloves which are two-fingered mitts.

Oh yeah, I'm a big fan of hand warmers on race day. Even when I'm wearing my current gloves that don't keep my fingers warm, I'll run with hand warmers for the first 1-2 miles. Love those things.
Many road races allow dropping layers at the start.....for those, head to salvation army or similar and buy a cheap flannel. Race groups many times donate them back after the race.

How cold is cold? I run down to -35 C and I just use my cold weather XC ski gear. Anything above -10 C and I use light gloves, something windproof and breathable, below that I'll use light mitts and below -20C I'll use a warm xc ski mitt

I guess it’s possible we have different definitions of “cold”. I am in SE Uk. I don’t run in -20C!!
Yeah, it's definitely relative.

I remember years ago I bought a TNF McMurdo parka and a lot of the reviews I found online where from the UK (London even) and people were complaining about it not being warm enough. I don't put it on above -20 C 🤷

That's on my schedule for later this week! Got a race mid-month and expecting it to be cold in the starting corrals.

Skimming this thread and I like it. Lots of good encouragement and tips. I’ve been running a while but am always up to help others and look for some tips too. 👍🏻
