so... has anyone ever met a celebrity of any kind? list any politicians, musicians, actors, comedians and other known personalities you've encountered.

did you know that elle macpherson has her own line of lingerie? they have (had?) an office a few doors down. she came by to visit them once the office was up and running. i was in the elevator w/ my boss and she got in at the same time.

she's taller than you might expect but is definitely aging quite gracefully.

I shook Kid Rock's hand at a hockey game. He's a very polite, friendly guy. He sat two rows in front of us.

John Denver

Harry Chapin (for those of you old enough to remember who he was)

One of the local news anchors here. She wasn't very nice.

When Robert Urich was filming the Spencer For Hire series, he built a house on the outskirts of Boston. I sold him some custom building materials for his home. Seemed like just your regular guy.

When Gerald Ford was president, his motorcade came through the town I grew up in. I 'shook' his hand, although it was brief, closer to a hand slap.

Mmmm, Spencer for Hire... The object of many a fantasy for this young wife.

:D Harry Chapin even kissed me on the cheek. :nana: I saw his concert about a week before I got married. My maid-of-honor and I went out and did a little (very little, trust me) partying before the big day.

It's the kiss that does 'em in, right? You can be honest. After they kiss me and know they can't have me, life becomes meaningless.

I meet a lot of celeb's through work, but not in a glamorous way-

Mel Brooks - A god, he was like that all the time, he was even teasing the guy who brought the sandwiches round.

David Hasselhof and Ralf Feinnes were a personal dissapointment, being overstimulated bullys, with a very special sense of self.

It was all I could do to stop myself wrestling Alyson Hannigan to the ground she was ace.

very interesting stories so far. it's amazing how we can come across these people just through ordinary everyday life.

the first celebs i met were don muraco and roddy piper (the wrestlers). both at different times when i was selling electronics. don bought a strereo system and i can't remember what piper bought (this was a good 15 years ago). i also met the original green grape guy from fruit of the loom when i was at the same store. lol.

i met donald trump at a moody blues concert at the taj in AC about 10 years ago. he was sitting right in front of us with marla maples.

i went to high school with the WWE diva known as "sunny." we were on the yearbook staff together.

in my time as an event producer i met don mclean, maya angelou, bobcat goldthwait, dr. ben carson, the band america, the band from "animal house," frank calliendo (from mad tv), sex columnist anka radakovich, john waters, john douglas, the gza (from wutang clan), the coaches from "remember the titans" (if they count as celebrities), john astin and maybe another couple that aren't coming to mind. other than maya angelou, all were fantastic people.

Hubby and I worked security at a local Sci/Fi convention (DragonCon) so we got to meet (and herd) many celebrities (entire cast of Serenity, the twins from Harry Potter, Peter Mayhew, Ray Park, etc). Most of them are "normal", some of them are nutty, many are down-right freaks :D

Say it ain't so, EJ! Maya Angelou seems so classy. So, she wasn't very nice?

she's an educated, classy woman who also happens to be an elitist, aloof bitch of a woman.

funny you should ask. i had a conversation with a guy (a stranger) about this very issue today in a store. i was wearing my event shirt from her program so he asked if i'd met her. long story short, he thought poorly of her because the college course she offered (whever it was) required that you submit an essay to her explaining why you thought she was brilliant before she accepted you into her class. i know nothing about this, but he said he took the issue up with the college because he was so annoyed.

btw... this conversation was the impetus for this thread.

Ha, fantastic idea. I wonder how different the essays would have looked after the course, once the patina had worn off a little.

Now see, this is how I see Oprah Winfrey. Kind of aloof.

Verbi, do you get Oprah Winfrey where you are?

Only on satellite, she has that magic quality of being a majour star that people feel at home with, I bet without that air of remoteness she would have to spend her day listening to the hoi polloi with their seemingly endless brand of stupid.
But nobody can supplant the Judge Judy re-runs from the 1980's we have running about tea-time, perfect skive T.V.
Sorry that was a little thread hijack, as you were.

Bryant Gumbel lived in my dorm when I was a freshman in college (the dorm housed fewer than 60 people, btw).

Met Ed Muskie also at college (same alma mater), as well as two or three governors during high school and college.

A local newsperson who was not at all nice. A local radio host who was spectacularly nice.

Norm Abram of This Old House.

Jim Lovell, the Apollo 13 astronaut.

I know this is not a complete list but I haven't had my weekend wine yet.

I don't mean to brag but Commissioner Gordon's (from the old Adam West Batman TV show) sister-in-law was my baby sitter.

I've 'met' a fair number of famous people. There was one of those ''theaters in the round'' places nearby so there were many occasions to meet or run into some performers. When I worked as a waitress at a fairly famous place where they dinned mostly. I got to wait on lots of people, some memorable others not. Johnny Mathasis was sweet. Henny Youngman wasn't... it seemed as if he thought he was on stage for he entire dinning room.

The cast of the Lawrence Welk show were fun and very nice. Hank Williams, Jr. was quiet back then -- there were a few other country names but I can't think of them. George Burns was fun, he liked to dine where the staff ate, it was quiet and out of the way, he'd come in late and he said he just wanted down time. I got to wait on him a few nights, I liked him. I can't remember them all but it was a fun place.

I met John Denver too BG. He was taller than I expected. I met him out in Aspen when I was visiting. I met Goldie Hawn -- she was SO nice and saw Steve Martin while they were filming Housesitter. I saw Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Sarandon when they were filming Witches Of Eastwick. Didn't see Jack Nicholson.

I see Steve Tyler, and on occasion Joe Perry and some of the other guys of Aerosmith. I ran into Steve a couple of weeks ago up at Mass Gen. Hospital -- he sounds great and said he feels fantastic. They hit the road in a couple of weeks.

In college I was involved with the student activities and met a lot of people through the shows. Chrissy Hind of the Pretenders was very bitchy. The Clash guys were nice, Stray Cats a touch quirky ... can't remember anymore.

I've met my fair share of famous people, actually.

My family lives not far from The Carter Family Fold and we are distantly related to the Carter Family (on one side of my family) as well as to Loretta Lynn (on the other side of my family). So, when I was younger, I actually met June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash. I've met Roseanne Cash as well as few of the lesser known members of the Carter family. I've also met Loretta Lynn, Earl Scruggs, and Ricky Skagg.

When I was in high school, The River, starring Sissy Spacek and Mel Gibson was filmed in my home town as well as some the smaller towns in the area, so I met both Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek. At the time, our pastor's grand-daugher was selected to play one of their children in the film, and one of the football and baseball coaches from my high school was selected to appear briefly in the film during the baseball game scene. Nearly our entire town--it's very small--got to be extras in the film, which was really cool. :)

When I was in college, I was involved with the student activies board and through that met Richard Marx as well as Billy Graham.

I've also met Sharyn McCrumb and Adrienne Trigiana both authors who set many of their works in the SW Virginia area or the Appalachians. I met them when I worked at a library and they came to read selections from their work.

I've also met Nikki Giovanni as her student and then as a colleague for awhile. She's as passionate in person as she is in her writing.

Finally, one of the professors at the university where I did Ph.D. work was one of the members of Sha Na Na; he was there when they played at Woodstock. And he continues to play as part of a band formed by department members.

Oh...and...as an alumni of where he played college ball, I have met Michael Vick.

I loved her books set in West Virginia--Big Stone Gap, was it? It's been a while since I read them.

Now why the fuck didn't I think to do this for my Comp classes?

This isn't quite elbow-rubbing, but my ex-husband (who loves The Blues Brothers) was in an undergraduate Fine Arts course taught by this guy. I'd forgotten about it until now.

Sorry I am unable to load that page, but am interested to know who it is, please?

this reminds me of the story of how don johnson lost his virginity to his babysitter. lit rules prevent me from mentioning his age as it was 6 years below the requirement if i remember the story correctly.
