Rope - length

Found this picture awhile back then attempted it with ribbons and a typical nylon clothesline - but they were about 6m max. I had the final loop back left - to the back from the 2nd diamond/hole, then back to the front to tie it up.

I'm thinking that to be safe, should I go beyond 7m? I'm 5'5" and about 160lbs. I've already read the guides all over but they seem to talk about the types of rope, but not really about the length one should buy (according to weight/build/size).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

The amount you are going to need will depend on two things. Your physical size and how diamonds/crossovers you want. If you are, like Mamid, 'Goddess sized' and you want several diamonds you may require upwards of 30m. If you are a slim waif and only want a few diamonds you might get away with 12m or so.

For a first time for someone your size I would recommend going with about 20m and see how it works out, then increase or decrease length to suit. BTW, I highly recommend having someone place the rope on you. As another person can easily add or remove slack as needed. And, yes, I would happily volunteer for that task. :D

Thank you.

Sadly I am doing this all on my own - and will definitely be doing it on my own. Thus I have to stick to ones that I can do myself. If you know of any other diagrams (or books) on this, please do let me know.

Several days ago I did a photo shoot of placing one on myself in my Sneak-a-peak thread. Here are the links to the two posts. Also do a Google search for Karada Shibari

There are a few modifications you need to make to do this be yourself, I think you will see those in my pics....

The main danger in too much rope is having to pull the ends for what seems like forever. I err on the side of more than you need and wrap the ends into bar-wraps (basically they look like thick handles)
I think at 5'5'' and 160 I'd pull out a 50 footer, a 30 MIGHT fall a little short and cut down on the number of diamonds - but like I said I err on the side of too much. I also find I like more to grab onto when self-tying.

You're right about that - with the ribbons (which aren't much to hold but just wanted to try the feel), i was spending a lot of time trying to get them through.

I'll try to see if I can get the type of rope I need this weekend - will be sure to post an update then.

Thank you for all the recommendations. I can't wait to try it out!

For what it's worth, the text on the pic says "7-meters." That's a hair under 23 feet. However, like others stated, based on your size and the fact it's better to have a little too much than a little too little, something over 30-feet and under 50-feet sounds about right.

Oh, and I'd liked to see the pics, too! ;)

I knew there was bound to be a time when someone asked for an example pic :) I don't think I can - unless I bind myself fully clothed. Maybe that will be interesting anyways. I'll see what I can do.

Two words... remote control... or... cable release.

Or aim the camera at a mirror. If you can lena thank you for doing so. If you can't, that's okay.

I always play around with mirrors, so that's a good idea :) Thank you.

My camera just has a timer - no remote (how I wish I had one that did!).

I will give it a shot tomorrow.

I gave it a shot this afternoon - purchased the rope (3/8", 50 feet @ $1 per feet).

There was lots of excess/unused length at the end - 50 feet was a bit much :) I understand that one can do other things with it (more diamonds as someone had mentioned), so it's okay.

Had to do it in a rush so I only managed to get the 3 diamonds on the front (like the picture/example). Really liked the feel of the nylon rope against my skin, absolutely surprised by how silky soft it feels. It felt good when I was looping them in and feeling it slide along my skin ..

Here's a picture, it isn't much though since the batteries ran out after about 3 shots.

Thinking of getting 1/4" next and somewhat regretting passing on the braided texture for this as well.

This is quite and interesting thread! Your picture look great Lena, I hope you'll experiment some more and take more pictures of your results.

Personally I've saved the guide for doing it, in hope of getting to use it at some point ;)

well done! and thanks for the pics.

Then you have the problem of untying.

If you are doing it yourself, I have to go with the folks that say make it short. You can always add a piece, but if you get tangled that could be dangerous.

I personally would not cut rope any longer that 25 ft. if you are self tying. I would think that if you had 50 ft in 25 ft increments, and two or three in 10 or 15 ft increments you should be alright. What does the rest of the folks think?

I would also use the thicker rope like nothing under 1/4".

Thank you, Ebonyfire.

Shall I split the 50 feet up into 2 x 25 feet pieces? Or have them split into different lengths?

For the 1/4" - it was the most recommended for the shibari rope bondage. The way it looks or the tension on the skin. 3/8" was recommended as well - especially for first-timers, for comfort etc. This is according to one of the sites.

Tomorrow will try a few other tutorials, and will do a full/complete tie-up of the first position - if it's secure may wear it under my clothes when I go out.

Great first attempt, lena!
And thank you for sharing the results. :)

Agreed, thank you for putting up the pic. It looks terrific and sounds like it feels good too.

I think that 2 25 ft. may be just right to manupulate. If it is cut too short, you have more knots. Practicing is a lot of fun isn't it?

I use cotton clothesline cause I like to wash it and dry it. It gets softer with use and rope burns are minmized, and if it gets two dingy I throw it away, and don't feel bad about the cost.

When I wash it, I throw it into a lingere bag, zip it up, and throw it in with the towels.

Went out on Sunday and got a bit more - 1/4" x 25 feet and 3/8" x 15 feet (the beautiful braided one, which unfortunately unravels so easily - I have to do the ends up properly).

Will attempt the original shot (fully) with the 25 feet one - it's just about 7+ metres. Let's see if it fits my body.

Tying up the pearls

My 'interpretation' of it - clothed, and my larger size (compared to the model). I used a 1/4" x 25 feet rope - there was quite a bit of excess in the back.

Earlier tried it out with the 15ft one, and it was a little short - did not make the final loop.

Another one?

Maybe I should stop posting pictures as if not this will get moved to AmPics (and I don't want that).

Getting much better at tying knots and such but .. still not very solid/crisp in the tension of the rope. I guess there is a certain difficulty in doing all of it yourself.

That is one of the biggest issues with trying to tie yourself. I always have willing victims who will let me tie them for practice. I and of course I have tied up all of the subs I know. It gets easier with practice.

The photos look great lena, and I've been keeping up on your attempts in this thread. I, too, have saved the instruction pages, in the event that I get an opportunity to try these out on myself sometime.
