Ron Paul group to defy IRS

Who said the IRS isn't politicized?

..................................................

Ron Paul's nonprofit Campaign for Liberty will fight the Internal Revenue Service's demand that it reveal its donor list to the agency, despite having already been fined for refusing to do so.

"There is no legitimate reason for the IRS to know who donates to Campaign for Liberty," Megan Stiles, the communications director at Campaign for Liberty, told the Washington Examiner in an email on Tuesday. "We believe the First Amendment is on our side as evidenced by cases such as NAACP v. Alabama and International Union UAW v. National Right to Work. Many 501(c)(4) organizations protect the privacy of their donors in the very same way as Campaign for Liberty. For some reason the IRS has now chosen to single out Campaign for Liberty for special attention. We plan to fight this all the way."

Ron Paul suggested that the group will refuse to pay the IRS fine in an fundraising email to supporters about the agency's request for information.

"Paying this outrageous extortionist fine — just to exercise our rights as American citizens to petition our government — may even be cheaper in the short run," he wrote. "But it’ll just embolden an alphabet soup of other federal agencies to come after us." Paul's email said that the rule requiring that 501(c)(4)s list their donors is "rarely enforced."

Stiles accused the IRS of trying to silence her organization. "The IRS technically requires donor information from 501(c)(4) organizations and is forbidden by law from releasing it to the public, yet despite this they have 'mistakenly' released the information repeatedly over the years," she wrote. "Often these leaks have been made to political opponents of the conservative groups whose information was leaked. Leaking the donor information is intended to harass and to intimidate those donors from donating to political causes. Campaign for Liberty has refused to provide donor information to the IRS to protect the privacy of our members. Now the IRS has demanded the information and fined Campaign for Liberty for protecting its members’ privacy."

The law is very clear.

You can take 501(c)(4) status and reveal your donors and get a tax exemption.
OR
You can take 501(c)(3) status, keep your donors secret but get NO tax exemption.

Ron Paul's group is trying to have it both ways.

Following me around from thread to thread again?

The obsession continues.

You can take c3 status and keep your donors secret if they don't contribute above the threshold.

See form 990 for details.

At least we never had to.

sorry the IRS has no credibility. they are defying citzens united which leveled the playing field

that was proven despite the Dems attempt to white wash a scandal far worse than Watergate.

Why doesn't the IRS go after slime and terrorist supporters like Cindy Sheehan who refuse to pay federal taxers openly

I'm sorry, that smell of licorice in the room apparently isn't the disgusting black jelly beans my room mate likes for Easter but instead is some kind of drug being pumped through my air ducts. Since I'm gonna die soon anyway I must ask, is it the chemicals baking my brain or did someone say Citizens United leveled the playing field?

No, that really is a Talking Point™.

Watergate was an out and out criminal act, ordered by the president.

The IRS is a make believe scandal because someone in Congress wants to catch the president doing something when NOTHING happened.

Why do you hate facts?

Has he wished death to your family yet?

Not very often - every other day or so. He once prayed my kids would die in a fire and I could hear their screams. He also accused AJ of molesting his own daughter.

Like I said, he's mentally ill.

The only thing Issa proved is that he's an attention grabbing fool for believing the majority of the American public believe his bullshit!

He's the boy that cried wolf.

Yawn. Sounds like some manufactured drama to get the symPATHETIC to fight for freedom by giving money to the cause. I'd like to see the next quarterly filing and see how successful they were.

How about some righteous indignation over something meaningful?

If those organizations were political than the IRS was doing due diligence in validating their status as tax free organizations. If they weren't political than the investigations weren't politically motivated. What's also lost in this discussion is it was just as many left leaning groups as right leaning. While the IRS may have been zealous in their investigations, no laws were broken. Each time a conservative calls this worse than Watergate they come across as uninformed, stupid Rushbots.

To be fair, it was not as many left leaning groups. It was also left leaning groups, but more right leaning groups.

It could of course be the case that there were more right leaning groups applying for 501(c)(4) at the time making the ratio naturally higher.

Let's see what sort of political groups have been popping up like measels during this latest presidency?

I'll let y'all ponder that while I go put a kettle on.

Can you prove Nixon ordered the tenth rate break-in known as Watergate? He was never convicted or even charged, even though the news media kept it on the front pages for years.

As for the IRS scandal, that remains to be seen. Already there are emails instructing investigators to concentrate on certain groups based on ideology. This may not be illegal but it is certainly unethical and it is illegal for the IRS to get that involved in partisan politics.

And in the same time period, liberal groups were also under the same scrutiny but Issa et al neglect to say anything about it.
