First off, what you're looking for is a female dominant. Second, it can (obviously) be physically satisfying. For some it's also VERY psychologically satisfying. The why's and wherefores of this depend on the person. It's believed by some that people who are in control all the time tend to want the opposite in the bedroom; it's psychologically satisfying because it brings balance to their life.

Others just feel more secure and happy when their partner is the one in control and all they have to worry about is keeping their partner happy - this is more common in people for whom this is a 'lifestyle' - people who aren't only submissive in the bedroom. In the case of this person it's psychologically satisfying because they aren't struggling to be someone else - they only have to be themselves.

In your case (and this is just a guess), I'm going to bet it's the whole 'taboo' thing. The reason I'm guessing this is because of your comment about growing up in a conservative environment - I'm assuming that means the man is the head of the house, etc., etc. Taboo can be very arousing for some; nothing is quite a turn on as 'you shouldn't do that'.
