NASA plan worries lawmakers

JOHNSON SPACE CENTER — Texas lawmakers want President Barack Obama to outline a clear vision for Johnson Space Center’s future role in NASA.

...

Houston Mayor Anise Parker wanted Obama to detail a specific mission for Johnson Space Center, as he did for Florida’s Kennedy Space Center during a speech there Thursday.

Obama promised $40 million to retrain Kennedy Space Center contractors and the creation of 2,500 new jobs at the center.

While the president works out more details of the plan, there is a risk of losing thousands of capable workers at Johnson Space Center, which would take years to recapture, Parker said.

I question your premises when you criticize the wealthy innovators in a free enterprise setting, yet grant them Saintly status when they become part of government. All men have faults and frailties, they do not become God like when you imbue them with the power of State.

Typical strawman. The problem with attempting to argue with you is that you never argue with me, you argue with your own overactive imagination.

I am for clear separation of Church and state, and similarly for separation of business and state - this includes regulation - you're particular delusion is that private enterprise, cannot be held accountable for it's actions, which cannot be defined as tyranny - a private enterprise is just another bureaucracy, another institution - it's capable of all the same things any institution, including government, is capable of.

The justification for government is to protect the individual from predatory institutions, including private enterprise when that applies - one does not accomplish this by not holding private enterprise accountable for what it does - whereas conservatives like yourself claim to support "freedom", but fail to associate it with accountability when it comes to business.

If the individual is accountable to society, so is the institution, that's just being consistent.

For many, they are just jealous that they were born less capable than othrs, in terms of intelligence quotients and an inner drive to succeed.

While one can advocate a system that treats all equal under the law, reality informs us daily, that some are born more equipped to deal with reality than are others.
You need look no further than the mirror to confirm this.

Your stated philosophy, in so many words, and imprecise, seems to penalize the intelligent in order to succor those less fortunate in the gene pool. I question that as it is the upper few percentile of the intelligent that create the innovations that provide comfort for all.

There's the Randian bullshit, which you continue to spout, in spite of your stated realization above that these are merely fictional characters.

Nobody is "succoring" anybody but themselves, the evidence is that social justice and prosperity go hand in hand - the truly intelligent are usually the first to note this - its the half-bright like yourself that fail to follow things to their logical conclusion.

If an intelligent person initiates a scheme that will improve the lot of humanity, he or she cannot do this alone, one requires the services of others who may be "less intelligent", if intelligence is defined as "visionary", but whose contribution is nevertheless critical to the success of the enterprise.

If I open a restaurant, I need carpenters, concrete placers and finishers, plumbers, electricians, finishers, roofers, etc., etc., then I need cooks, servers, cashiers, accountants, suppliers, farmers, truckers, right one down to the pickers in the fields - a gap anywhere here and the enterprise will fail, no matter how smart I may be - to simply call these people "parasites" is the height of hubris, they all, in doing what they do, are earning a living for themselves, and in doing that, they are serving their interests as well as mine, regardless of what their respective IQ's or level of ambition might be.

Without them, my enterprise will fail, or at best, I'll have to build it myself, then do all the cooking and cleaning, grow my own crops, etc., which means I'm not going to have time to enjoy my success, or even to spread the wealth, maybe starting another enterprise that keeps people employed in useful work - I'll be too fucking busy - unless, having no work, they can't afford to eat out in which case I have a net gain of Zero - in fact, I'm now operating at a loss.

I need them as much as they need me, "intelligence" ain't got shit to do with it.

I am an atheist; I do not and have never had blind belief in anything, be it theology or philosophy. I am not a teacher and do not pretend to be so on this forum. I have chosen instead to expose the total lack of reason and rationality of that part of the political spectrum that casually advocates the oppression of the mind and abilities of those who prosper in competition with others.

A hundred times I have asked for anyone advocating a controlled, regulated society, to justify in moral terms how you can use force to achieve your ends. I never receive even an attempt at an answer.

Perhaps one day you will take a whack at it?

:)

Amicus
The day has come - justify it? Murder and robbery are "businesses" - should we deregulate them?

Everybody needs to eat, regardless of how "intelligent" they are, that's the basis of all economics, money is simply an abstraction that makes more complex arrangements of interdependence possible.

Your constant whining about this fundamental universality is tantamount to asking everybody but you to kindly stop breathing - it ain't gonna happen - deal with it, and do something useful for a change.

In answer to Zeb's original query (without the invective and illogical overtones) - rocket scientists and those who work with them - engineers, technicians, machinists, planners, administrative personel of all types, will find other jobs. Those jobs might not be a job they love or even like, but they will find other work, always have, always will.
As a career aerospace professional (who's worked for NASA a time or two) I can assure you all that those folks will seek technical employment that will enhance their knowledge base. That is, if they lose their jobs. No one's gone yet.
I'm quite disappointed that the POTUS hasn't included a lunar base in the long range plans (other than the orbiter) but a Mars mission will yield positive results for the world economy - just like the moon missions did forty years ago....
I'm more disappointed in XSSVE whose intellectual qualities and reasoning are not enhanced by jousting with a certain individual who has no ideas other than those spouted by one Alisa Rosenbaum, a hack whose infantile social theories can't be entertained by anyone who can pass the eighth grade; and whatever FAUX NEWS talking points he happens to absorb that day....

Still, the morons even have their own news network these days.

You know quite well that working people are not parasites; other than yourself who are you trying to fool by insisting that they are?

The City the charges a fee for a business license for your restaurant is one of the parasitic creatures I am addressing. A business license is nothing more than a tax that support bureaucrats that create nothing.

There are approximately two million Federal employees that produce nothing useful or edible or of any value; they merely restrict, control and regulate and are paid by taxation of those working people you listed and many more.

The buying public is the entity that will determine if yiou have invested your money and created an eating establishment that fills a demand in your area. People visit any particulat business of their own free will and will return only if the product and service is superior.

Every government worker at every level of government is a worker totally supported by tax revenue taken, by force, from those you listed, the working people and each government worker lowers the living standard of those who work and produce.

At the present time 47 out of every 100 Americans are parasites, living off the 53 remaining working people.

Just how long do you think this can continue before the working people begin to refuse to support your parasites?

Actually the idea of using robotic space exploration is a good idea, as a stepping stone.

When you consider it by cost in money alone the launching of a robotic vehicle is fractional compared to the cost of a manned vehicle. (Even though it is still high.)

When you consider it in cost of life danger then it becomes even cheaper. Who mourns a robot that gets fried by Cosmic or Solar Radiation?

If we want a presence on the Moon fine. (I personally wouldn't mind seeing it happen but I want to see it done safely.) Do it in a safe and less expensive manner.

Start by sending more robots to the moon. These can start doing research on such things as construction using the Regalith of radiation proof buildings and the creation of fuels for return trips. Maybe five to ten of these kinds of robots per year for say ten years.

While this is going on research and design a cheap yet safe re usable craft. Not one designed by commitee to use out dated technology and low bid parts.

While this is going on push the design of the suits the crew will use and wear.

Who will pay for all of this you ask? Why not private firms? Kennedy Space Center is already talking about haveing private firms come in. Ahhh but that doesn't fit in with those who feel that national pride wouldn't be met. Okay have the government also chip some green in.

(No Spaceship one isn't going to do it, but it's a start. Look at what the other corporations are doing to get some ideas.)

At the present time 47 out of every 100 Americans are parasites, living off the 53 remaining working people....

Does this mean you're finally going to pay your 40 years worth of back taxes, or are you going to accept the fact that you're one of the biggest parasites of all?

And BTW, you never did clarify whether you're getting your chemo from Medicare or paying out-of-pocket. Two years of chemo? Now that's a hefty chunk of change. If you can afford that, you can damn well afford to pay your debt to Uncle Sam. :)

You've already forgotten about your buddies on Wall Street crashing the economy with their unregulated credit default swaps? "Even if a light did suddenly bloom forth,.." Ami, Dude! The light bloomed forth a year ago. Open your eyes. The world does not exist within the pages of an Ayn Rand novel. The world exists down at the unemployment office, where millions of Americans are one government check away from starvation, thanks to you and your laissez-faire free market goons flushing the American dream down the toilet.

You want to talk about Right or Wrong? Talk to the head of household who is now camped out with his family at a homeless shelter, while lying scumbag Wall Street traders are basking in the sun on the beach at Cancun.

Excellent post, Dee.

There is an odd style of dialectical tension in the continuing conflict between right and left, freedom and slavery on this forum that is amusing to point out.

For those on the sidelines who occasionally send a little note of encouragement in my defense of individual rights, please note that the Left always attacks and never defends or even postulates a rational position on anything.

I have mentioned this before, but in all my time on this forum, only one, Pure, has admitted to being a Socialist and a Marxist and even he/she preferred to attack and not defend or explain the Statist position.

All the others, and there have been many that have come and gone, seem to have a preference for something but an absolute hatred of the free market and individual human freedom.

Even some of the more reasonable seems to accept the premise that one must sacrifice at least some degree of personal liberty and privacy for the greater good. My consistent query to those is a simple one, how do you justify using force to abrogate my rights to benefit yourself?

No one ever answers.

One would think that with the countless examples of how Statism, choose any moniker you wish, Socialism, National Socialism, Social Democracy, Marxism/Leninism, call it what you will, it involves the use of force to accomplish your desired end.

Justify that?

The fundamental premise of any system must be the primacy of human individual rights, life, liberty and property; or you have greater and lesser degrees of slavery when an individual has fewer rights and fewer liberties.

That seems to be a startling concept now as it was at the inception of America; imagine, an individual with the rights to say NO to King, Pope and Tyrant. An individual who could exercise his innate rights regardless of the powers that be.

The reason the left-wingers refuse to state their basic premises is that they know the average person would shy away in abject horror at the altruistic concept of sacrificing self for an undefined greater good.

Free market capitalism is more than an economic system, it is, at the same time, a moral and ethical guideline that instills individual honesty and integrity between individuals in a form of trust that is essential for civil interactions between people.

The Left would have you turn over all those choices to the intellectual elite who always know better than you, how to expend your time, energy and wealth.

It is a sick, rotten philosophy that need be exposed to the light of day and truth, reason and rationality and like all evil, it will just wilt in the sunlight.

I believe you are referring to the "State", meaning the organization empowered by our forefathers, and Mothers to provided, for the common Defense, among other duties and responsibilities as form time to time may be legislated by the peoples representatives, under our Federalist Republican system, Right?

All the others, and there have been many that have come and gone, seem to have a preference for something but an absolute hatred of the free market and individual human freedom.
I believe that it is the recognition that many people do not have the moral or ethical self control not to commit fraud, Rape and Murder, among other breaches of the law, as established by the foregoing Government, of and by the people.

Even some of the more reasonable seems to accept the premise that one must sacrifice at least some degree of personal liberty and privacy for the greater good. My consistent query to those is a simple one, how do you justify using force to abrogate my rights to benefit yourself?

I believe you are referring to the accommodation we owe our fellows, for respecting our rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of our Happiness, (Or our Bliss, as Campbell called it,) we must reciprocate. It is part of the deal we make to be covered under the compact that we inherited from our ancestors. I prefer it to the Parliamentarian system which in most cases is even more corrupt.

No one ever answers.

I did.

One would think that with the countless examples of how Statism, choose any moniker you wish, Socialism, National Socialism, Social Democracy, Marxism/Leninism, call it what you will, it involves the use of force to accomplish your desired end.

Justify that?

The end is a civil society where we don't have to worry about, crooks, liers, thieves and threats to our lives and liberties, when walking down any street in the nation. Where we do not have to spend $700 Billion a year defending ourselves from the uncivilized, Socialism, National Socialism, Social Democracy, Marxism/Leninism, call it what you will. The end we seek is a free society where you are judged by your actions, not your words, which are fleeting reflections of a perhaps troubled life.

The fundamental premise of any system must be the primacy of human individual rights, life, liberty and property; or you have greater and lesser degrees of slavery when an individual has fewer rights and fewer liberties.

Do you really feel like a slave in modern America? Does there exist a higher order which reserves the fat of the land for itself and denies you your portion of the best, music, Dance, Song, Information, and yes, Money?

Well Cheer up Ami my ole buddy! The Aristocratic Class has changed it's name and they are a whole lot more amenable for you to join. Just sell your soul to the Dark Lords and, well your troubles are over. Unless they need a fallguy that week.

That seems to be a startling concept now as it was at the inception of America; imagine, an individual with the rights to say NO to King, Pope and Tyrant. An individual who could exercise his innate rights regardless of the powers that be.

Imagine a King who was fighting a war and needed money to kill French, or Dutch or...? to satisfy his creditors, who also sold him ships and timber and all the various necessities for war. "And these assholes can't even take a Tea Tax!" Since they had little representation in Parliament and the Parliament was just as disorganized and corrupt as it is today, or even worse. Americans were at the edge of his Majestie's mind.

The reason the left-wingers refuse to state their basic premises is that they know the average person would shy away in abject horror at the altruistic concept of sacrificing self for an undefined greater good.

So you do not feel that running into a burning building to save a baby would be worth wile for a right thinking individual? Well there would not be a profit in it, except for the life of the baby. Or joining the Service to pay forward for your own citizenship, made possible by the altruistic concept of, all for one and one for all?

Free market capitalism is more than an economic system, it is, at the same time, a moral and ethical guideline that instills individual honesty and integrity between individuals in a form of trust that is essential for civil interactions between people.

Only when people obey the law, and we have had very egregious examples over the years of those who have paid little penalty for major "White Collar" crime. Face it the "Free Market" as you call it has developed into a Casino de' Wall Street, where they are taking bets and defrauding our very peoples retirement funds with exotic trades, puts and calls that have nothing to do with providing the funding for research and development and manufacturing of our technologies and skill sets needed for the next fifty years. All the while skimming the hell out of the system they established, to divert speculations money into bets which they can project the value of and which they sell at a profit to unsuspecting investors.

Very little is free, except the freedom to exploit the system.

The Left would have you turn over all those choices to the intellectual elite who always know better than you, how to expend your time, energy and wealth.

It is unlikely that you would want to make the myriad decisions about everything that t he Government does, so I assume you are speaking with some license. It is true when we choose to develop large Bureaucracies in which no one is responsible at any level for the stupid and, or corrupt acts that the Government has perpetrated the supervision of the peoples business is needed. Look at the VA, it was horridly underfunded for years and did a horrible job where they could, now with more funding they are making a difference in the lives of veterans across the nation. True, we need to supervise them, so that they do not fall in the trap of believing that their clients are problems rather that a challenge to be met and surpassed in order to support the people who offered their lives to defend our country.

It is a sick, rotten philosophy that need be exposed to the light of day and truth, reason and rationality and like all evil, it will just wilt in the sunlight.

I fear that our Republic will be sorely tested in the years to come, but I believe that if we apply the Law in every instance, that things will change for the better. Bad laws will be identified and changed, good laws will gain the support of the people and our Courts will protect not only the rights of property but our ethical rights as well.
Where is Cheney going to be tried?

That may be the only absolute and rational statement you have ever made on this forum. Good for you!

You know as well as I do, that Corporations are held culpable just like any individual, so let us not pretend otherwise.

Your hatred of corporate functions, free market mechanics in general, reminds me of those people who pretend to slip and fall and injure themselves in a large business concern for lawsuit purposes and those who pretend to choke in restaurants for a free meal.

I can see no other reason to hold such hatred towards the only ethical and moral system in existence; that of laizzes-faire capitalism. All the others are run from the top down and the little man has no chance to succeed at anything.

Since I doubt you want to be a slave, I suppose you expect to be among those who run things, eh?

A bit selfish?

You know quite well what I mean by Statism, but for your edification and that of others:
Main Entry: stat·ism
Pronunciation: \ˈstā-ˌti-zəm\
Function: noun
Date: 1919
: concentration of economic controls and planning in the hands of a highly centralized government often extending to government ownership of industry

You invested no small amount of time and energy is your Post, no promise I will do the same as you keep setting your own strawmen and then demolishing them all by yourself; you are so good at it, you don't need me.

You only hint at a deep dark secret shared by most who advocate control over the individual. What you are really saying is that you do not trust yourself to have moral or ethical self control; therefore, you judge others by your own morality and presume to control them as you need controlling. You are wrong, of course, as any set of statistics concerning the criminal element in all societies indicates that about 97% of all men do have moral and ethical control over their actions. It is for the remaining 3% that we have policemen, courts and jails.

Even some of the more reasonable seems to accept the premise that one must sacrifice at least some degree of personal liberty and privacy for the greater good. My consistent query to those is a simple one, how do you justify using force to abrogate my rights to benefit yourself?

No one ever answers.

I did.

No, you did not; not even a little bit. It is not a sacrifice to respect the rights of others, nor is it your obligation to 'grant' Liberty to anyone, it is theirs as a birth-right, at least in America. You do not listen to me or pay attention to my words and I doubt you even sense the uprising taking place in America at this very moment by those who think and feel as I do, that you have gone far past the communal obligations outlined in our Constitution and transferred the rights and liberties of the individual to the State, which essentially controls everything. Listen up...it is everywhere you look, ahem, 'Blowin' in the Wind', (egads, what have I done? Sorry, Bobby)

One would think that with the countless examples of how Statism, choose any moniker you wish, Socialism, National Socialism, Social Democracy, Marxism/Leninism, call it what you will, it involves the use of force to accomplish your desired end.

That is pretty much gobblygook. A military force is an extension of the Police Powers authorized by the Constitution. Call it what I will? I call it unbridled evil of which the common denominator is the sacrifice of all individual freedoms to the State.

Actually, yes, that higher order is now Government Employees and Union Labor, both of whom demand higher salaries and better benefits than those working in the private economy. Our government was created to protect the rights of the people not tax them to death to pay for more government workers. Tax Day and the Tea Party demonstrations indicate that part of the year, January through April that you must work to support government before you begin to work for yourself.

Well Cheer up Ami my ole buddy! The Aristocratic Class has changed it's name and they are a whole lot more amenable for you to join. Just sell your soul to the Dark Lords and, well your troubles are over. Unless they need a fallguy that week.

A little puzzled there, are you saying the Colonists' had no grievance with England and no cause to revolt?

The reason the left-wingers refuse to state their basic premises is that they know the average person would shy away in abject horror at the altruistic concept of sacrificing self for an undefined greater good.

So you do not feel that running into a burning building to save a baby would be worth wile for a right thinking individual? Well there would not be a profit in it, except for the life of the baby. Or joining the Service to pay forward for your own citizenship, made possible by the altruistic concept of, all for one and one for all?

Having been a Volunteer Fireman for a few years in a rural community, I can say that you don't have a clue. Profit is not always dollars and cents, although you approach it from that direction. Paying Forward was a bad movie and a bad concept. If one truly respects others and admires the nation one lives in, one acts to protect the life, liberty and property of others as a matter of course, not obligation. If you need to be told, or drafted before you participate, that is your ethical dilemma, not mine. You pull another cliche from the Three Musketeers as if it had meaning; it does not. "The altruistic" concept is self sacrifice, like giving your soul to God, aka Christianity, or to the State, aka Communism. Niether play a role among free men.

All of the above is Jingoism, so you don't like the Stock Market; don't participate. There are risk takers and those who bury their wealth in the backyard or under a mattress; do as you please, but let those with risk capital or investment expertise help build a nation as the Stock Market has always done. Nobody every promised you a Rose Garden, there are bad guys everywhere. Refer back to my earlier response to yourself; you wouldn't trust yourself to invest, trade, buy and sell honorably, thus you impose your own morality upon others.

The Left would have you turn over all those choices to the intellectual elite who always know better than you, how to expend your time, energy and wealth.

It is unlikely that you would want to make the myriad decisions about everything that t he Government does, so I assume you are speaking with some license. No single entity can or does make the myriad decisions that 300 million people and their many and varied enterprises demand. It is impossible, as we see with the failure of government to run even a Post Office. For your information, it is that great Invisible Hand of the free market where individual men and women or groups of them, make decisions based on their own self interest that guide the market place. I don't expect you to understand that even though it is not a complex subject.

If you have ever been in a Lawyers office and viewed the books...if you ever managed to observe a library in the State Capitol and view the thousands of books and hundreds of thousands of Statutes, Laws, and then imagine the Congressional Library...the first few years of my talk radio career, I received all the House and Senate Bills from both the State I was living in and the US Congress. I had to stop receiving them because the radio station had no further storage room; in two years it filled a 20 by 20 room to shoulder height.
We are overburdened with laws, whether you know it or not; thus it is not a matter of applying law or even enforcing it, it is a matter of eliminating most of the laws, rules, regulations, and restrictions from the lives of people and from the marketplace. Government needs to be about one thousandth the size it is before it can function as intended.

Where is Cheney going to be tried?
