Solid class inducted this year. Tom Petty, The Ramones, The Talking Heads and Isaac Hayes.

Now, the Rock 'n' Roll hall of fame is a fairly useless institution but whenever I hear anything about it I start thinkin' the same thing,

Cleveland? Cleveland?!?!?

Memphis or Chicago or, christ, New York.

Something.

Cleveland Rocks

They worked pretty hard to get something positive down on the lakefront (especially after Municipal Stadium's demise). Pei's building for the Hall of Fame is pretty spectacular.

I think the claim to fame was Allan Freed's radio show in the early fifties (before he moved to N.Y.C.). It was there that he supposedly coined the term "Rock and Roll."

Here's something interesting: Cleveland Rocks

Well, so their claim to fame has nothing to do with the music???

Seattle, London, Detroit, Liverpool. Geez I can't think of a city with less claim to having the Hall of Fame than Cleveland.

How is disseminating the music having "nothing to do" with it? Rock'n'roll is the original electronic medium--without radio, it would not have been the same.

But it's music--it's everywhere. I'm not really sure I see your point. I'm not necessarily a Cleveland booster, but why not Cleveland? The music is in the air-waves. I've never been to Detroit (ok, passed through), but that doesn't change my opinion of Motown. It's not like having a "Battle of Gettysburg" museum in Colorado.

And the induction show is from New York anyway. So when your inducted, you won't actually have to go to Cleveland.

Because it wasn't the first station that played the music. By all accounts that was in Memphis.

So all I see that Cleveland has is that one of their DJ's was one of the first to call the music Rock and Roll(Albeit something is never said for the first time on the radio)

Why not cleveland? Because the art form has no ties to the city. It has strong ties to other cities. The Hockey Hall of Fame shouldn't be in Mexico City because Hockey has nothing to do with Mexico City.

Was it not the people of Cleveland that purchased more albums and LP's per captia than any other city during the 70's?

So when planning on where to build a Hall of Fame wht not build it where its fans exist?

Do you think the passing of lead singer Joey Ramone has anything to do with the Ramones election into the Hall of Fame this year?

That has got to be the weakest argument ever. Ever.

Seattle? It would be a weak case(Grunge and Hendrix) but it's better then Cleveland.

London? Again not a great case(The stones, the whole english music scene) but, well, you get the idea.

I'm happy with Cleveland :) Being in Columbus it's only an hour and a half, just far enough to make a whole day of it, yet close enough that it's not a MAJOR excursion.

It is a pretty cool building, but not something I really want to do more than once every 5 years or so.

Great Class of inductees......Chet Atkins was also inducted.........One of the greatest quitar players ever...:)

So, where woudl you put it? New York, 'cause that's where the record companies are? Liverpool, 'cause they produced one great band? L.A.? Memphis, 'cause of Sun Records?

If you had to ask me? New York or Memphis.

You're simplifying the impact both cities had on the music.

Memphis was the birthplace of the music. It's where it gained popularity. The first radio station to play the music was there. It was home to the "king" of the music

What you're missing about New York is what goes with the Record Companies being there. The artists were there. How many great albums were made in New York? Hundreds. New York is where the early songsmiths did their thing. New York was the site of the Beatles first television appearance. It's the birthplace of punk. How many memorable things in New York connect to the music? Dozens. From CBGB's to the Ed Sullivan theatre.

Heck, New York is probably too crowded. Put it out in Woodstock.

ROCK & ROLL HALL

I think the Hall of Fame is kind of loose on its criteria to get in. First recording must be aminimum of 25 years old. That part is fine, but what about sustained recording or sales criteria.
Many of the members do belong, but then there are those that I question.
One guy I think belongs that is missing is Ian Hunter.

Just my opinion.

Once bitten twice shy...

It deserves it's own casino in Las Vegas...

And a wedding chapel...

Too Early for Brittany

Its too early to see if Brittany will be inducted( I am not a large fan of hers. SHe appeals to the younger sugar pop group)

Having seen the Ramones on several occasions and enjoying thieir rapid machine gun style of playing at a live performance could I hear one last "One, Two,Three, Four..."

Thank you Ramones for all the great memories.:D

I think the location had more to do with the funding plans the various cities put together than any claim to a place in history.
If it was based on history, Detroit would have as strong a claim as any city. You can't discount Motown; The Supremes, Temptations,Four Tops,Smokey Robinson,Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Martha and the Vandellas...right there Detroit has a claim on rocknroll history few cities can match.
Not to mention Jackie Wilson, Aretha Franklin, Bob Seger, George Clinton,Mitch Ryder,Ted Nugent, Madonna,The MC5, Iggy Pop, The Romantics, Kid Rock, Eminem, White Stripes....
If Detroit didn't deserve to have the Hall how come there are so many Detroit artists IN the Hall ?

The worst oversight, I think is Alice Cooper.
One problem the Hall of fame has that is going to get a whole lot worse is that it is so Americacentric. Artsits that were popular and influential in other countries are mostly ignored. Where are Roxy Music, Kraftwerk, Mott The Hoople or T Rex? In the next few years , as the British bands of the late seventies and eighties become eligible this is going to become a big problem. Geeze, the Clash and Elvis Costello were eligible this year! I guess the Hall voters don't think The Clash are as "rockandroll" as Billy Joel

I happen to live here by way of Phila. Pa. Philadelphia could have been considered, also, because of the impact that it had on music.

The reason the Rock Hall is here is because of Alan Freed, a local DJ. He popularized the phrase "rock 'n' roll" in the early 1950's. He also emceed the "Moondog Coronation Ball" which was regarded by all as the first rock concert.

I'm not saying one way or the other that Cleveland, Ohio should or shouldn't be the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I'm just explaining why it's here.

It's really a cool place to visit if you ever get the chance to do so. It sits right at the edge of Lake Erie. Right next door is the Science Center, too. Right now the Science Center has a display of some of the treasures from the Titanic.

When you go in the Spring and Summer, Lake Erie is so beautiful. You can sit on the benches and watch the boats go by as well as see the light planes fly overhead from the smaller of the two airports in the area.

Cleveland has gotten a bad rap over the years, but I've lived here for several years now and it's really quite nice.

Thank you.

I like this idea too!!:D

I can envision a massive Rock 'n Roll Chapel where you can pick out the Hall of Famer to officiate at your wedding!

Thought this year's grouping was pretty solid. CBGB's in NYC is virutally a shrine to the Ramones already.:rose:

cleveland

I will be going to Cleveland 4-10 to 4-13 and will be at a reception at the RNR Hall 4-10. Can't wait to get there!!
