Roam where you want to

I'll be hitting the Gulf Coast at some point this summer, hopefully a couple of times.

Hey! Roadhead is getting through a brutal work project and I told him in October we are going someplace warm but we don't want to leave the country. Is the Gulf Coast or Emerald Coast a bad idea in October because hurricanes and stuff? Will you let me know? Also will Tweet you.

Also: hi and

My summer vacations so far have been driving 2x across the state to drink wine in 2 wine country areas. Had a blast. Brought home too much wine. I am beat. Super busy summer. I need a vacation from my vacation. Also the air quality is shit here now so I am not traveling for at least a week after the air is clear. Fucking BC fire! When it clears up I am back to Yakima! The crush will be here soon!

Is there such a thing?

This is Roadhead's stance but I am the one who has to find a home for it in our crowded wine rack that now spans an entire wall (I am exaggerating). We started drinking the gift stuff so we could fit all the new bottles.

Yeah, *cough, cough* those fires. We've had a constant haze that, at times, has been as thick as I've seen pollution in Shanghai. There have been a few sunsets where the globe in the west was as red as a tomato.

We had some 'evacuees' staying with us the last few weeks of July.

Some wineries and lake-time in the Okanagan planned in two weeks, fires and road closures permitting, then the end of August in the sand and surf of the Oregon Coast.

Sounds to me like you need another wall of wine.

Omfg. This smog. I haven't seen Mt Rainier since 2 weeks ago. I am over this. Did you see the forecast for Sunday though??? Yay!!!!

I fucking hope Chelan doesn't go up in flames again because that is where I am going next weekend. I stayed in Manson last time and did the wineries on the Manson side last year and I have been jonesing to go back and finish the tour. We are staying in the Chelan side this time. Have you ever been to The water park there? Wondering if the kids are too old for it.

Where on the Oregon coast? When we go, we stick to Manzanita in the summer season because it is so much more quiet than Seaside and Cannon Beach. We only go to Seaside in the winter! I love the Oregon coast in the winter.

Our three-month cross-continent drive ended a couple months ago when I was hit with eye infections and started going blind. Treatments and surgeries have restored about 75% of my vision and I can still drive, so we'll take some shorter but extended trips this fall in our little housecar. Might drive up to around Bend, Oregon to watch the eclipse.

The housecar: a Thor Chateau class-C on a 25-foot-long Mercedes Sprinter platform, 90 inches wide (that's slim), with a 3.0L turbodiesel engine that gets 17-20 MPG, about the same as our old Ford Exploder. It's a cheap way to see the world. Staying in federal campgrounds (cheap for us seniors) or Indian casinos or Elks lodges, and cooking our own meals, keeps costs way down. But we'll never be full-timers. It's good to go home.

It's also good to go wine-tasting, get sloshed, park at the winery, and sleep it off. Hey, unlock the gate! In Oaxaca Mexico are many mescal and tequila brewers with free tasting. Stateside, we only have wine, brewpubs, and a few artesenal distilleries. Where are the cannabis tasting rooms?

Anyway, the rest of this year will see us cruising the nearby Northwest. Next year we might do a spring drive to Carolina, up to the Erie Canal, and back across the historic California Trail. Late summer, we might do another drive to Alaska. Cruising glaciers is fun.

There are tons of cannabis rooms here. You can't try before you buy yet legally but I know employees who would smoke you out behind the store. Seriously, weed is everywhere here.

Sorry about your eye trouble!! Glad to hear you are on the mend.

Be careful about where you go in Oregon next week and the week after. Our local media is reporting that millions are heading there and the state is going to be overwhelmed. They are even talking a gas shortage. Ugh.

LOL!

If you get to Frisco, you might drop by the Whitechapel Gin Bar.

You know Roadhead's family is there, right? We actually go quite often to SF. Adding to da list.

I did not know that.

I won't be going there for the annual Dec meeting for two years because the Moscone Center will be being revamped. I'm a bit sad about it.

There have been a few fires in and around Chelan - nothing major like back in 2014. We were in Wenatchee when that was happening and, YIKES!

We've not been to the water park, so I couldn't say.

We usually stop in Newport for a day, maybe get some sailing in, the head down and meander between Florence and Coos Bay. Dune buggies and dirt biking in the dunes, and miles of beaches to explore in the JEEP. There are dozens of little coves and limited access beaches we've discovered, or been directed to by locals. I love, love, LOVE the Oregon Coast.

And yeah, Seaside, Cannon Beach, and Lincoln City are best enjoyed in the offseason. Winter is awesome, especially during storms. Mother Nature at her bitchiest.

A relative, a licensed grower in San Francisco, gives me all I want. I haven't had to go retail for a long time. I was just curious about tasting other varieties.

Thanks. Two eye surgeries in two weeks were a bit shocking. The meds are tricky too. Something has me shitting hard little turds like deer droppings in our mountain meadow. And now those are hard to see. Oops.

I've been following the news. We'll avoid the obvious cluster-fucks. And we'll tank-up on diesel around Klamath Lake (we used to live near there). That'll get us into and out of the lively zone.

Yes, Chelan, Leavenworth AND Wenatchee are iffy this time of year and am I on crack? I remember driving out of Chelan last summer and there was all this awful smoke and I remember a few days of media coverage of fire burning big chunks of farm land. Was that not last year? I have not been to Chelan before then so I thought that was last year BUT we were in Wenatchee last summer so I might have mixed that up. Fuck I am old and can't remember shit. Also, there are so many fires every year, I can't keep them straight.

I have never been to Coos Bay! I have lived here my entire life and never ever been there. That is just sad.

Remember that ENORMOUS storm we had in April? I was in Seaside for that. The waves were so fucking huge!! We stayed at the Rivertide Suites so we had a stellar view.

I am now looking at Austin in October. I will avoid the City Limits mobs so it will be after. Anyone have thoughts on the weather in Austin in October? Is it muggy and hot af?

Texas is always hot and humid. I was in Austin in the fall and it was in the 90's

Locals may know more.

I missed this post.

Coos Bay is nice, but we use it mainly as a base for exploring the dunes and beaches just north and south of Coos Bay.

Yeah, I remember that storm, and all the rain that seemed to never stop...
We've been in Seaside and Depot Bay for some ripper storms. There's that short section of road that runs right along the seawall in Depot Bay, that has the seals hanging out on the rocks below and the spraying blowholes during high tides. When we saw the storm there, the waves pounded that wall so hard you felt the road tremble underfoot, and the salt water came over that wall in briny sheets that reached the sidewalks and businesses across the street. Wonderful, powerful stuff!

We usually stay at the Rivertide Suites, or the Best Western right on the beach when we go to Seaside.
Have you been to Sunset Beach yet? If not, check it out next time you are there.. It's a gorgeous stretch of beach north of Seaside, that we take the JEEP right out on. Very few folks go there because the waves, surf, and riptide can be pretty brutal, but it's a nice break if you're finding the beach crowded in Seaside. The sand is fine and beautiful, and the kids love flying their kites there. We usually see some folks ridings horses there, other 4x4s, and usually end up pulling out one or two cars that get stuck in the soft, fine sand.

I have never heard of Sunset Beach. That is an awesome suggestion. Thanks!!

While we are in the subject of off roading, have you ever explored FSR 73 off 410 past Enumclaw? The Suntop Lookout is accessible from there. Huckleberry Creek runs along a section of it . It washes out every other year, but it is a magical place to explore in a Jeep.

I am heading EAST for the weekend, not South. What a fucking mess on I-5. Have you seen the warning messages on the DOT signs on all the freeways? Alert! Traffic to Oregon is going to suck balls!
