RIP Queen Elizabeth II

Ah, yes... of course that would make sense if she asked. We didn't get that audio here, just the video. I knew that they (the Royals) must invite you to touch them, by word or gesture... my mistake not to point that out. But commoners should never just reach out and touch them by typical protocol. We've seen quite a few of our Presidents and their family members put arms around or touch without any indication that sort of contact would be welcomed. It seems like someone dropped the ball on instructing them what's proper and what isn't. As an American, I would never presume to ask permission as you say the lady in the crowd did...but she's His loyal subject and I guess that makes a bit of a difference. Normally, Southerners would never dream of NOT giving a hug or patting a shoulder when meeting a stranger, especially someone from another country...that's just how most of us are. Since American politicians cornered the market on shaking hands and kissing babies (ugh!) probably a couple of centuries ago, maybe that's why so many people thinks it's okay to paw at them in a crowd. LOL
Not quite a few. Michelle Obama. One. And Her Majesty graciously returned the gesture of affection. 😁 she was the most incredibly considerate and protective woman! It was one of the things I admired her for! And truly, what gentleman would say no to a lady who asked to kiss him On the cheek? I imagine it pleased him, actually, since he has not always been the most beloved of the Royal Family.

Ogg will know, but I think the Brit naval salute is the same as the US salute, and different to the Brit army salute.
I've searched for the photo, which came up a couple of times on my MSN news feed yesterday, to post the link. I haven't been able to locate that photo, which was close-up of three figures, Charles, Anne and an army officer. I don't know where it was taken, but I've found loads of photos of uniforms and salutes taken that day. At different times Charles wore RAF, Navy and Army uniforms. In the photo that intrigued me he's wearing the Field Marshal's uniform that he wore when carrying the Field Marshal's baton. Both are saluting, palm down, elbow high in a strikingly American style. I thought that there may be an obscure rule of protocol operating to acknowledge the overseas realms, more probably he just got confused as to which uniform he was wearing at the time.

Our PM at the time, Paul Keating, took flack for ushering Her Maj before him up some steps, with his hand at her back. He collected clocks, so I suspect she didn't overly mind.

And Aussie girl Jane Priest famously kissed Prince Charles on the cheek, on an Australian beach, back in 1979. She looked better in her bikini than he did in his daggy baggy shorts.

🤣🤣Like the King and Princess would haul ropes. 😉
Charles was a naval pilot. Probably no ropes involved.
The Reporting I saw said he was in a Field Marshal's uniform, which wouldn't be naval (this doesn't relate to your post--it was in someone else's post).

They've all (apart from randy Andy and mopey Harry) been in a wide variety of uniforms. It's been a challenge for the Royal watchers to keep up.

Yes, that uniform was Guards Division. He wore it following the cortege to St Giles, so I assume the salute was there, but a wide variety of searches have not turned it up.

The Monarch can set his own rules. One famous Naval tradition is that toasts to the King (or Queen) in a Royal Navy wardroom are always said while sitting. A previous monarch while serving as a midshipman, kept banging his head on the low deck beams so when he became King he decreed that in the navy, you sit for the toast.

In the words of the last great American Philosopher: "It's good to be da king."

Coverage of the QueueE2 (the queue to file past the coffin) is more entertaining than the rest of the royal coverage atm. The Queue is over 4 miles long, and they announced it would be closed when it got to 5 miles. Various websites are tracking the end of the Queue, and what3words is proving woefully inaccurate.

There is a queue to get wristbands to be admitted to the Queue. If they do close the Queue we will get a guerilla queue forming...

Wristbands are for disabled people who join a shorter queue. The normal queue is currently 9 hours long.

I dare say, very likely he was thinking to protect her from a fall. I think that rather chivalrous. There are some times when safety would just outweigh protocol. ☺️🐝
