It's a fave quote of mine and used to be my sig

"The difference between the left and the right is that the left is primarily interested in human Rights, The Right is interested in property rights."

-George Carlin

There is no difference. Just a debate on which groups reap the largess of the Treasury.

Not my definitions, but close enough for me.

Libertarian

Libertarians are self-governors in both personal and economic matters. They believe government's only purpose is to protect people from coercion and violence. They value individual responsibility, and tolerate economic and social diversity.

Left-Liberal

Left-Liberals prefer self-government in personal matters and central decision-making on economics. They want government to serve the disadvantaged in the name of fairness. Leftists tolerate social diversity, but work for economic equality.

Centrist

Centrist favor selective government intervention and emphasize practical solutions to current problems. They tend to keep an open mind on new issues. Many centrists feel that government serves as a check on excessive liberty.

Conservative

Right-conservatives prefer self-government on economic issues, but want official standards in personal matters. They want the government to defend the community from threats to its moral fiber.

Authoritarian

Authoritarians want government to advance society and individuals through expert central planning. They often doubt whether self-government is practical. Left-authoritarians are also called socialists, while fascists are right-authoritarians.

Liberals believe government should play a major role caring for the welfare of citizens. Unfortunately, the government has no money of its own and pays for these entitlements through income tax. Liberals strongly favor human rights except for the right to keep your own income. That belongs to everyone.

Consevatives believe government should play a minor role caring for the welfare of its citizens. They want government out of their lives and out of their wallets. While many conservatives are staunch defenders of individual rights, some are vehemently opposed to victimless crimes, homosexuality, and separation of church and state.

Forget where I read this, but I heard them defined this way:

A Liberal is a Conservative who has been arrested. You get arrested, you get really interested in civil rights and really concerned about throw-the-book-at-'em judges and prosecutors.

A Conservative is a Liberal who has been mugged. You get mugged, and all of a sudden the rights of the individual (you) become more important than the rights of the group (groups like criminals). You start loving cops, you start thinking that the death penalty isn't enforced often enough.
