Well, that went well. A sneer lit his face, one he caught in the mirror and liked the sight of as he kept driving down the road, one arm out the window, the other holding the wheel of his car loosely. It was the middle of June, a Wednesday, and he imagined he was quite a sight flying down the highway in his red vehicle. Perfectly shined and cleaned, exactly what you didn't want before a long highway trip, going to who knows where. It wasn't as if he didn't know where he was headed, but he wasn't entirely sure where he'd be when he got there. Mentally, not physically.
For Adrian Meeks looked anything but settled right now, his eyes hiding waves of rage and frustration that were radiating off of him, into the hot summer air that came in through the open windows, the blaring radio, the wind that was drowning out everything. Everything but the betrayal he'd felt and learning his wife was cheating on him. It had happened that morning; with him wanting to surprise her by taking an afternoon off work, coming home to finding out she'd been sleeping with his best friend. The classic scenario, one he'd felt could never happen in his life; he'd given her everything. A great house, a great home, lavish evenings out, a great sex life...or so he'd thought. The looks and sounds coming from her in the brief moments that he had managed to witness before they'd spotted him indicated that she hadn't been as satisfied with him as he had been led to believe.
The two of them had been fucking her for weeks. They'd confessed to everything, a feeble effort to keep him from the anger, the rage he'd been known to fly into when things went wrong. A side of him that hinted at something darker, deeper, a part of him that he hadn't shared with his wife. The timing had never been right, and the cold pit that had settled in his heart had dulled him to everything as he told her to leave.
To get out of his house.
His boss had understood, given him immediate leave. "Take whatcha need, Adrian. We'll be here when you get back." At the age of thirty-five, he'd earned ample leeway and time to get away, clear his head, forget about his cheating whore of a wife....
...and to stop holding back. The next woman he saw would get to see who he really was. No more being sweet, no more pretending, acquiescing to whatever whims they had or desires.
The next one would be put in her place.
In the distance, coming down a hill, he squinted as saw something in the distance. It looked like someone was on the side of the road, looking for a ride...it wasn't often in this day and age you saw hitchhikers. With the mood he was in, Adrian was expecting to pay them no heed, to just drive on by and let some other sucker take them.
It was fortunate for him (although not as much for her) that he found himself slowing down as his car approached her, and he got a better look...seeing more then just a passenger as he rolled down his window.
"Hey there." His voice was cautious, even as he realized he probably still looked a little intimidating, his shades and hard look gazing back at her. "What, um, you look lost..." He started, trying to soften his gaze a little as he looked at her. The smile wouldn't come quite that easily, but Adrian hoped at the very least she wasn't scared off.
Another moment as he settled himself. Still not smiling, but his tone was at least a bit welcoming as he spoke.
"I'm Adrian. You looking for a ride?"
