My best tip would be to not use it. Firstly, 'borrowing' without asking is not very polite, secondly if it is an antique worth a substantial amount and you damage it I for one would not be happy if I were the owner (I also would not be happy even if it were not worth much or antique), thirdly you do not know if and where it has been used so that could raise health issues and forth if you 2 use it you also could introduce health issues for others, fifth is it may have sentimental value to the owners which may not be enhanced by your private use. Buy your own and just be all round safe and well mannered as a guest.

Pretty much just a stick with a piece of leather attached to the end. Im researching now. Seems to come in all kinds and sizes. Used to encourage a horse to go faster I guess.

crops take a little getting used to, and it seems like the more flexible the leather strap on the end, the more effective it is.

the wider the leather strip, the more sensation inflicted.

In my meager experience, it can be used with the popper just being flicked, or use it in a cane-type fashion, I'm unsure if the popper snaps down when it's used that way. I've never been in a position to see that, since despite what I tell my children, I don't have eyes in the back of my head.
