Well we have always used red silk rope. I have two lenths of it. Each length is about 18 inches long.

Thats the only rope we have ever used. We don't really get into anything that elaborate though. Just hands/feet bound to each other or the bed posts.

Handcuffs work very well, and I kind of liked the little mark it left on my wrists the next day. Of course, I was pulling and writhing against them while I was bound, so they left a mark.

Rope is also good.

Just don't tie anything too loosely- it sucks if I'm pulling against the rope or scarves of whatever it is that I'm tied with, and then they come loose. Kind of ruins the mood.

Leather cuffs are the best thing.
No marks (unless one pulls really really hard) and they're made for that purpose so they don't restrict your blood flow. Plus they almost always have handy-dandy D-rings for attaching other stuff to the restraints.

Metal handcuffs, the police kind, SUCK. Save your dollars.
They can get dangerously tight all on their own with just a little pulling by the person cuffed. They can leave really horrendous bruises (bruises that are *impossible* to explain away to anyone with more than three brain cells). They're grossly uncomfy. And, the keys can get misplaced.

Scarves, tape, any kinda cord: dicey. The knots can become un-knottable with just a little pulling. You gotta cut the fuckers off before the person who has consented to be bound freaks out so don't use good scarves.

Good rope is sensuous and giving. It's erotic and smooth. If you wrap the wrists in something like a washcloth *before* you tie them, then they won't bruise.


Safety note:
When playing with soft restraints, always have some scissors or a knife nearby in case you need to get your partner out of the restraints in a hurry.

Listen... check the cuffs you buy to insure they have finished edges. Rolled, if possible. If they have plain unfinished edges, they could/would/might/may cut into the delicate skin of wrists more easily when the play gets intense and the person in them begins twisting and pulling and struggling.

Pay more for finished edges.
Pay more for some kinda lining, too, or insure your cuffs are made of thick leather. Most people buy cheap cuffs in the beginning, before we know anything much, to the tune of $50 or more, and then have to rebuy cuffs later, after we know what we need and want.


Finished edges.
Roller buckles.
D-rings, at least one or two, along the periphery of the cuffs.
Lockable hasps.

While I wouldn't argue with Cym in anyway, I know I'm unlikely to need what she does. For me I have a pair of 'Sports Cuffs', that I bought at the novelty store. A neoprene (like wet suite material) wrap, secured by velcro (I think you also call it hook and eye?). They have D rings and are held togther with a carabina. Soft and strong, suits my nearly nilla needs.

Leather cuffs with rings, definitely. I'm with cymbidia on this one. They don't come cheap to get good quality, but they're worth it. Plus, they smell wonderful.

Worst? Low quality handcuffs. Icky, tight, unsexy, and bruising.

What 'impromptu' item worked the best? The worst?

The satin belt of a kimono. Satin comes loose from knots more easily than does silk or other impromptu materials, and belts are long enough to allow some significant knots without restricting blood flow.

Worst? Polyester rope. Those were some freakin' chafe marks, I'll tell ya.

Still the leather cuffs. Although, if there's a power struggle involved, handcuffs (good quality, police-plus ones) are nice and quick--they can be applied on the fly and work very efficiently.

Worst--velcro. I freakin' hate the stuff. Plus, anyone with a decent amount of strength can pull them right off.

His own belt. If it's a good, soft leather, it should bend well. And, you can use the buckling mechanism to adjust the length of your knots. Plus, there's something sexy about being caught in bonds made of your own clothes, I think.

Worst? Duct tape. The adhesive gets into the hair on wrists/arms, and it's a pain in the ass to get off again. Also, I fucking hate velcro. Just thought I'd mention it again.
