i guess i'm just an idiot, but havent found a free, ACCURATE pic resizer on line,
can anyone help???
i've used some so far,
looking to change size from approx 150 k to slightly less than 100k so i can post them
prob i find is that although i resize them, the new size is all over the place
usually coming out closer to 10 k, not 100k,
do i shoot for a value like 600x800 kind of thing? or pixil size???

thoughts??
thanks in advance

I really like GIMP. It's like a free version of Photoshop, and while the more advanced functions have a learning curve, it's a powerful program that's well worth putting a little time into.

Reducing the dimensions and file size are pretty easy with it, too. For dimensions, you go to Image>Scale Image, and make it the size you want. To change the file size, do File> Save a Copy (or Save As...), then name the file (e.g. "Pic_of_Me.jpg"), select JPEG from the dropdown box on the lower right of the menu, check the 'Show preview in image window' box, slide the Quality slider to where it hits the right kb size, and finally click the Save button.

You could also check out Irfanview. It's also free and has the advantage of being a small, feature-rich program that can do several things that most photo editors can't, including changing whole batches of images. I never liked the user interface as much as GIMP or Photoshop and found it more difficult to use in general, but that could just be my brain and a lot of people here really like it.

Irfanview is fast, free, non-distorting and user friendly -- it's an image management program specifically designed for prepping pictures for online posting. If you only need to resize and/or make minor adjustments to your images (like adjusting contrast or broghtness) then it's probably the best PC/Windows based program you'll find.

GIMP is also good, but it is and image editing program rather than an image management program.

However, it seems as though you already have aprgram that will resize images adequately for use as attachments here at Lit.

The limitations on attachments are 800 pixels wide, 600 pixels tall, and 100KB or less As long as your pictures aren't distorted or degraded by JPeG compression losses, 10KB is actually preferable to 99.9999KB because it uses less bandwidth.

If you do have distortion problems, or setting the larger dimension to 600 pixels doesn't bring the JPeG filesize down below 100KB, then look in th ehelp menu for how to change the JPeG quality or JPeG compression ratio (they're the same thing, but different programs use different terms.) Irfanview and GIMO both give you a slider to adjust for each image when you choose "Save As JPeG." Your program may only allow changes in the preferences or Options menus.

A JPeG compression/quality setting of 70% or so will generally compress an 800x600 pixel image's JPeG file down to 45-55KB but the exact amount of compression depends on the ccharactersitcs of each image -- there is no way I know of to produce a consistent image size for any given compression setting. Just set the dimensions and adjust the quality to fit 90% or so of images below the 100KB filesize limit. (I've encountered maybe a half dozen colorful and complex images that won't compress below 100KB at a setting of 70%)
