GOP Gov. Snyder’s office says Detroit school kids have no right to literacy

The state of Michigan is being sued because several schools in Detroit are failing to teach children how to read, and Gov. Rick Snyder’s team of lawyers has come up with a novel defense.

According to local news station CBS Detroit, Gov. Snyder’s attorneys are claiming that children who are taught within the state’s school systems have no fundamental right to literacy, which means that the state isn’t liable if its schools fail to educate them.

The lawsuit, which was filed on behalf of Detroit students’ families by a California public interest firm, argues that children in Detroit have been fundamentally deprived of their rightful education thanks to neglect by Michigan’s state government.

“Decades of State disinvestment in and deliberate indifference to Detroit schools have denied Plaintiff schoolchildren access to the most basic building block of education: literacy,” the suit alleges, while also claiming that the schools’ “slum-like conditions” render them “functionally incapable of delivering access to literacy.”

CBS Detroit notes that a report from five years ago found that nearly half of all students in Detroit schools were functionally illiterate.

Consider: If you send your kids to a private school, paying money for them to be educated, and the school does not impart literacy, numeracy, the level of education you contracted for, then the school has failed to fulfill its contract. Public schools are supported by taxes and bonds i.e. public money, and those schools have the same obligations as do private ones. Cf quid pro quo.

Go ahead, argue that public schools are NOT obliged to provide such education. Then, logically, no gov't is obliged to do ANYTHING for taxpayers/citizens. No fire or police or sanitation; no traffic or health/safety or zoning enforcement; no defense, no protection, not a damn thing. In which case, all gov't is illegitimate and should be disbanded.

If you forget them first, then you won't need to spend the money giving them gold starred diploma's.

If you really forget them, then they should never crop up again for you. In reality, you want to always remember them so you can use them in examples.

How are parents supposed to pay for it if things are SO BAD and America is SO AWFUL under Obama? There are no jobs. It's all CRAP. The "establishment" has got to go. How are all these blue collar males who voted for Trump because life sucks so bad supposed to pay for it? If there is no public school system, who the f is going to stay home and take care of the kids if they can't? Oh wait a minute, they're all unemployed. I'm sure all those angry males are going to be delighted to stay home and take care of the kids they can't afford to put into school. That's a recipe for success right there.

Maybe, more likely, getting edumacated will only become a privilege for the rich. Of course, in Trump's world, once America is great again, everyone will be rich!
