Republicans

Gooden left the floor Wednesday night seemingly unaware he had voted yes.
Three Republican lawmakers — Reps. Louie Gohmert (Texas), Kelly Armstrong (N.D.)
and Randy Weber (Texas) — tried to change Gooden’s vote for him.

This is a big, big no-no.

According to a source who was on the floor, each of the three members tried to give
a red “No” card to the House clerks in order to change Gooden’s vote.
These old-style “teller cards” are a backup to the electronic voting system.

The floor clerks refused to accept the red cards from any of the three members.
Proxy voting is allowed on the House floor, a member has to submit a letter authorizing
that colleague to vote for them. The letter is then entered into the record and the vote
read out loud.

But Gooden wasn’t voting by proxy.

He cast his vote electronically and then left the floor. So what Gohmert, Armstrong
and Weber did could potentially be a violation of House rules.

Rep. Lance Gooden voted with Republicans to overturn the results of the 2020
presidential election hours after the deadly attack on the Capitol by insurrectionist
Trump supporters.

Trump is ‘likely going to lose’ new insurrection lawsuit

The latest lawsuit against Donald Trump under the Reconstruction era "Ku Klux Klan Act" is likely to succeed, legal experts have explained.

"When Democratic congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA) filed a suit against former president Donald Trump on Friday, he took a smart approach. Namely, Swalwell's suit is broader, and therefore would appear more winnable, than one that merely asserts that Trump incited the attacks on the Capitol," Loyola Law Prof. Jessica Levinson explained in an analysis for MSNBC published on Saturday.

The lawsuit also includes Donald Trump, Jr. and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

"In Swalwell's suit, more than half of the nine causes of action the congressman sued under relate to negligence. This is significant because under a negligence standard, Swalwell will have to prove something less than that the defendants intended for the Capitol riots to occur," Levinson explained. "But as with so many suits against Trump, a 'win' for either of these suits may be to survive long enough to take Trump's deposition and obtain discovery. This could bring new evidence — potentially damning evidence — to light."

Harvard Law Prof. Laurence Tribe said the lawsuit "is one Trump won't easily escape."
"Its legal basis is solid and its factual predicates are overwhelming," Tribe explained.

MSNBC legal analyst and former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner went even further and predicted Swalwell is likely to win.

A political appointee of President Donald Trump has been arrested on charges that he stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 and assaulted an officer with a weapon, marking the first arrest of a Trump administration official in connection with the insurrection.

Federico Guillermo Klein, a former State Department official, made an initial appearance by teleconference on Friday before U.S. Magistrate Zia M. Faruqui in Washington, where prosecutors said they would seek to jail him pending trial at a hearing next Wednesday.

The court papers obtained by The Washington Post detail Klein’s alleged conduct throughout the siege of the Capitol, tracing his apparent movements and actions from using a police shield to try to pry a door open, to calling for reinforcements from the crowd, to losing his red “Make America Great Again” baseball cap, looking for it amid the chaos, and then grabbing another red hat on the ground that turned out to be the wrong one.

Klein’s arrest is the most direct link yet between the Trump administration and the rioters, despite attempts by some conservatives to dissociate the insurrection from the former president. Many of the 300-plus people who have been charged in connection with the insurrection have described themselves as Trump supporters, while some have ties to extremist groups like the Proud Boys, which Canada has designated a terrorist group, and the Oath Keepers.

Klein, who is also a former Trump campaign employee, did not respond to a request for comment. A State Department spokesman said Klein served as a political appointee in the department from 2017 until his resignation in January. “This is being investigated by FBI, and they are the appropriate agency to answer questions specific to the charges,” the spokesman said.

Klein had a top-secret security clearance that was renewed in 2019, the FBI said. A LinkedIn profile the FBI identified as Klein’s also lists a top-secret security clearance and shows that Klein has been politically active in the Republican Party since at least 2008, when he began volunteering for political campaigns. Before joining the State Department in 2017, Klein worked for the Trump campaign, which paid him a $15,000 salary.

One of the many criminal investigations of Donald Trump may have ramped up to another level this weekend. Specifically, the investigation into Trump’s efforts to compel Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to commit election fraud in his favor.

Last month, Fani Willis, the newly elected district attorney in Fulton County—home to Atlanta—began a criminal investigation into the shakedown, including the infamous Jan. 2 phone call. We expected that it would be a classic slow-motion strangulation—the only proper way to take down a former president, especially one with a cult-like following. Things have moved along enough for Willis to empanel a grand jury as part of the investigation. Now, Willis has brought in one of the nation’s leading racketeering experts to assist in the investigation.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has enlisted the help of Atlanta lawyer John Floyd, who wrote a national guide on prosecuting state racketeering cases. Floyd was hired recently to “provide help as needed” on matters involving racketeering, including the Trump investigation and other cases, said the source, who has direct knowledge of the situation.

The move bolsters the team investigating Trump as Willis prepares to issue subpoenas for evidence on whether the former president and his allies broke the law in their campaign to pressure state officials to reverse his Georgia election loss. Willis has said that her office would examine potential charges including “solicitation of election fraud, the making of false statements to state and local governmental bodies, conspiracy, racketeering” among other possible violations.

Authorities arrest Oath Keeper seen with Trump adviser Roger Stone on morning of insurrection

A New York man with ties to the Oath Keepers militia group and former President Donald Trump's longtime adviser Roger Stone has been arrested and charged in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Roberto Minuta, of Newburgh, New York, was seen in a video first unearthed by ABC News flanking Roger Stone on the morning of Jan. 6 outside a Washington, D.C., hotel.

In the video, Minuta can be seen standing with Stone wearing a baseball hat and military-style vest branded with the Oath Keeper logo.

Minuta, who was spotted on video later that day in the gathering crowd approaching the Capitol, has been charged with obstruction of Congress and unlawful entry.

"Minuta and others affiliated with the Oath Keepers breached the U.S. Capitol grounds, where Minuta aggressively berated and taunted U.S. Capitol police officers responsible for protecting the Capitol and the representatives inside of the Capitol," according to charging documents.

Republicans just revealed their deplorable new priorities

By now, we know that the overly loud ruckus raised by Congressional Republicans criticizing too much spending and a growing deficit is a message leveled only when that spending is aimed at those of us at the bottom and middle.

Actually, there's another, lesser-discussed of the many pending legislative battles that will put this thinking to a test – approval for some billions this year to upgrade nuclear weapons, as part of some proposals to boost defense spending by an estimated 3% to 5%.

According to the Arms Control Center, the government is on track from the previous administration to spend more than to $1.5 trillion over several years to overhaul the nuclear arsenal by rebuilding each leg of the nuclear triad of ballistic missile submarines, silo-based intercontinental ballistic missiles, a new nuclear cruise missile, a modified gravity bomb, a new stealthy long-range strike bomber and warheads. Cost estimates for this year alone are $16 billion for the National Nuclear Security Administration systems and about $29 billion for the modernization of aging delivery systems.

I guess we can raise that money by using the "Eisenhower Tax rates"?:)

GOP senator tries to take credit for COVID relief bill he most definitely voted against

Yeah, this was easy enough to predict.

Part of voting against a COVID relief measure that polls better than dolphins riding glitter-farting unicorns on enchanted rainbow highways to free breadsticks and blowhole-waxing night at Olive Garden is that you’re morally obligated to sit back and take your lumps.

But as we well know, Republicans have no morals. They have talking points—and an unsettling number of constituents with the memories of below-average fruit flies.

So you get sly, winky-wink shit like this, from Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker:

For the nontweeters: “Independent restaurant operators have won $28.6 billion worth of targeted relief. This funding will ensure small businesses can survive the pandemic by helping to adapt their operations and keep their employees on the payroll.”

Note that the most important part of his tweet—“no thanks to me, of course”—somehow got cut off. He’ll be talking to the Twitter help desk about that soon, I’m sure.

Oh, and also … FUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKK YOU, SENATOR!

This is like Jeffrey Dahmer showing up at a church potluck and trying to take credit for the vegan hummus.:

Remember how Rethug's supported the Bill to help the people? NOPE!:)

The GOP has a new reality-warping message

Just as President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion stimulus was clearing its last hurdle on Tuesday and passing the House, Republicans on Capitol Hill launched a PR campaign aimed at suppressing Democrats' future ability to claim credit for a post-pandemic economic recovery.

GOP leaders, arguing that the massive relief measure was unnecessary, claimed that America's recovery was already underway and that the Democrats' sweeping package would only hinder — rather than hasten — the economy's revival.

"The economy is coming back, people are getting vaccinated: We're on the way out of this," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told reporters. "We're about to have a boom. And if we do have a boom, it will have absolutely nothing to do with this $1.9 trillion."

Now Rethugs worry about deficits, funny they didn't think cutting $2 Trillion in taxes would be a bad thing?

'What's wrong with these people?' Morning Joe nails GOP opposition to extremely popular aid packages

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough ripped Republicans for opposing the widely popular coronavirus relief bill.

The "Morning Joe" host predicted many of them would eventually pretend they had supported the $1.9 trillion aid package, while also supporting legislation that would significantly restrict access to voting in many states -- especially those lost by former president Donald Trump.

"I still, for the life of me, can't figure out why Republicans didn't find a way to get to yes," Scarborough said. "But they didn't. They keep thinking this is 2009, that Joe Biden is Barack Obama. He's not. The guy has been there 40 years, Barack Obama had been in Washington 40 weeks before he was running for president. Biden's team has been extraordinarily efficient setting this up, getting what they wanted. I can't figure out what the Republican strategy is."

Rethuglicunts are not people!

Governor Abbott of Texas marching lockstep with Trump Loyalists

Austin, Texas refuses to tolerate The Stupid

Austin Commits to Local Mask Requirement Amid State Rollback on COVID Restrictions
City will enforce masks, public health measures under local health authority emergency rules
expiring in April

Austin will continue to require the community to wear face masks, despite Texas Gov. Greg
Abbott's rolling back a statewide mask mandate, among other COVID-19 safety measures,
as of Wednesday, March 10.

As the Chronicle went to press, we are anticipating another legal confrontation
with the state of Texas over the city's mandate conflicting with Abbott's GA-34
executive order allowing all Texas businesses to reopen at full capacity without
any mask mandate.

On Wednesday (March 10) Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a letter to
Mayor Steve Adler and Travis County Judge Andy Brown, saying local leaders had
until 6pm that evening to rescind any mask mandates or business-operating restrictions
and “come into compliance” with Abbott’s order. “Otherwise,” wrote Paxton,
“on behalf of the State of Texas, I will sue you.”*

“The Governor and Attorney General are simply wrong.”

- Mayor Steve Adler

Republicans have controlled Texas since 1995. All they have done is cut taxes more and more until the state can't fund the public schools and universities like they should. The only thing the Republicans can do is cut services or raise taxes which they will never do.

BUSTED: Emails reveal further efforts by Trump's White House to influence Georgia elections officials

On January the 2nd, Trump called Raffensperger, saying that he must "find" the votes that would change the outcome of the election.

At some point, Georgia officials began recording the phone calls and after denials from the Trump White House and Trump allies, they released the recordings.

Those calls are now part of the evidence in Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis' investigation.

The cult of libertarianism is losing its grip on even many Republicans, just as it did on me over time. It's just scary that their substitute is Trumpism instead of real populism.
