Carney Ducks Questions about Access to President Being Sold



White House press secretary Jay Carney struggled to answer questions this afternoon about a recent New York Times report on Organizing for Action (OFA), the dark-money spin-off of President Obama’s campaign operation. The group is reportedly offering “the privilege of attending quarterly meetings with the president” in exchange for donations of $500,000 or more.

The report, said Fox News correspondent Ed Henry, “suggests that access to the president is being sold.” Was this true?

“No,” Carney replied, before going on to read from a prepared statement. OFA was an “independent organization” that will “engage in advocacy and grassroots mobilization activities,” he said, before noting the president’s desire to “reduce the role of money in politics” repeatedly without actually addressing the issue of money-for-access raised in the Times report.

Carney, a member of what his boss has described as “the most transparent administration in history,” subsequently walked out of the White House briefing room rather abruptly as reporters continued to asked questions.
