Everyone deals with the loss of a pet differently. My mother had a cat of 18 years, it passed away 2 years ago. This year she got a puppy. (she hadn't owned a dog in 30 years).

I cry for days lol. I have lost about 20 pets--most rodents of some sort. I tend to replace them in about 1 or 2 months or when I begin to feel those materal instincts kick in and I need something to love and take care of.

I vote for replacing the dead pet before they go. I didn't with my first because we still had one dog left and I was way to occupied with twins in diapers and my older son to even considering getting another dog then.

Now, my sweet little girl is getting up there - 13 - golden retriever - and I'm considering getting another dog soon, so it won't be so hard on the kids when she goes. Plus, a little young blood in the house is often good for older dogs. Keeps them more active which is great for their health and moral.

The one pet I lived to see pass away... we had to replace him immediately. It was just too depressing to come home to a house with no dog.

If I was a pet person, I would probably replace the pet before the old one died.
