Journalists who cover environmental issues in the western United States, along with some environmental activists, believe that Trump is considering a Wyoming lawyer named Karen Budd-Falen, who worked on the presidential transition team, as director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a federal agency that controls almost 250 million acres of publicly owned lands.

Budd-Falen’s name is not as famous as that of the Bundy family, which has had two stand-offs with federal authorities in their efforts to deny the rightful existence of publicly-held lands. But she may be more dangerous, and not just because she has represented Cliven Bundy in his anti-conservation efforts in the past.

For what she lacks in intelligence, she definitely makes up for in drive and hatred,” Ratner said, emphasizing that he has tangled with Budd-Falen for 15 years now. “She is relentless and dogged in her pursuit of, essentially, destroying those who want to protect public lands.”

“I think she understands how the levers of power work,” Zimmerman argued, “and has the ability to really undermine the work of the Bureau of Land Management.”

(Published by Ellie Phipps Price for The New York Times on Jul 24, 2017)

This week the House Appropriations Committee approved an amendment that would eliminate longstanding restrictions on killing wild horses and burros.

And it could get worse: Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is also pushing to end the ban on selling these animals for slaughter for food in Mexico and Canada; at the same time, Mr. Zinke wants to cut funding for fertility control — the only scientifically recommended, humane tool available to manage wild horse herds.

"...the Interior Department seems adamant, and in response has undertaken a campaign to spread misinformation to confuse the issue. At a recent House hearing, Secretary Zinke conveniently ignored the National Academy of Sciences report, instead telling lawmakers that fertility control efforts were a failure and nearly impossible to carry out."

(The pro horse non-profits have proved the Dept. of Interior wrong. By accomplishing birth control for horses, cheaply, easily, and without harm to the horses.)

"With less than $50,000 and a team of six volunteers, our Virginia Range project is undertaking a birth-control program for a herd of more than 3,000 horses spread across over 300,000 acres in Nevada. Already this year we’ve vaccinated more mares with birth control than the bureau did all of last year."

Given this, lawmakers should question why the bureau is so eager to strip these protections from the wild horses and burros Congress acted unanimously to protect in 1971.

Trump’s budget request where HE VERY CLEARLY REQUESTS WILD HORSES IN HOLDING TO BE KILLED AND TO ALLOW SALES OF WILD HORSES FOR “ALL PURPOSES”, THAT IS, FOR SLAUGHTER.

The House Appropriations Committee voted to reverse a ban on destroying healthy wild horses and burros that was contained in a spending bill signed into law by President Trump in early May.

“Let’s be clear: House Appropriations Committee members just signed a death warrant for America’s mustangs and it will lead to the wholesale destruction of these irreplaceable national treasures,” said Suzanne Roy, director of the American Wild Horse Campaign in a news release.

Wild horses share only a small amount of their grazing land with cattle, Roy said, but ranchers “want the whole pie.”

Thanks for the info.

I've been lucky enough to have seen wild horses roaming freely. They're magnificent!

Where are the right wing, government hating land grabbers now that Trump is president?

IMO, making Budd-Falen director of the BKM would open the doors to the land grabbers and cattlemen. IMO maybe the worst political appointment the orange idiot could make.

Watched a program were a cattleman intentionally drives his herd around the valley. Instead of allowing the to congregate by watering holes. Naturally the presence of predators keep herds moving. The effect was quite stunning. The herd is now actually good for the land. Fertilizing and tilling up the soil with their dung and movements.

Huge herds of buffalo were good for the prairies. Domestic cattle could do the same but it will require adoption of new management methods more inline with natural processes.

Shame the wild mustang can't be put to use. Only pony sized but can feed and forage not relying on heavy grain foods. I myself would prefer to have a mustang as a riding animal than a domestic horse.

Where is Karen Budd-Falen, now that a Bundy family ranch activist is sent to prison ?

U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro sentenced Gregory Burleson to serve a federal prison term

"The sentence she imposed of 68 years and three months was markedly lower than the 87 years prosecutors had requested."

April 12, 2014, standoff at the Bundy ranch

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas Dickinson said Burleson failed to show any remorse for his actions in Bunkerville, and that he came to the town with a small arsenal of weapons, knives, and swords.

Burleson also was ordered to pay $1.5 million in restitution to the government, to reimburse taxpayers for the labor and contractor costs of the failed cattle operation.

Burleson and the five others with whom he was tried were described by prosecutors as Bundy's "gunmen and followers," who showed up at his ranch from neighboring Western states armed with assault rifles and other weapons.

Prosecutors said all six were among hundreds who descended on Bunkerville in April 2014 for a showdown with federal officers providing security during a court-ordered roundup of Bundy's cattle.

Jurors found co-defendant Todd Engel, 50, of Idaho guilty of obstruction and traveling across state lines in aid of extortion. Engel could face up to 30 years in prison at sentencing Sept. 28.

Two months of testimony failed to reach verdicts for four other defendants who are being retried.

Interesting, thanks
