Religion anyone?

Ok and friend of mine got me on this subject tonight, so I thought I would get some more opinions. And besides....it gets alot of interesting and some pissed off responses..

What religion are you..... and why did you choose it?
Or was it one of those 'my parent/parents forced me to go' kind of things?

I'll bet you are a riot at a dinner party.

However, I'll bite.

I am a witch. Not wiccan, witch. I chose my path, or it chose me; the end result is the same. I'm on it.

That said, I do believe fervently that there is a different path for every pair of feet, and starting discussions of this sort can lead to a lot of smashed toes.

Hmmm... are you sure you couldn't have combined this question somehow with a thread on who we're planning to vote for in November for President? Now THAT would be a toe-smashing thread!

hmm I wondered why I never received many invites to those parties....

and the reason I decided to ask such a question is because I was interested in hearing responses... smashed toes and all.

Religion, or lack there of

At the moment I'm a non-practising pagan. Have been involved in many Christian denominations to the point of head Deacon in one church. Gave up when the big business of the church superceded the mission. The rebel faction ran a non/anti profit coffeehouse in the church basement. Good music and snacks, no preaching. The church elders refused to let us open our doors to the homeless on the coldest winter nights.

I can say some good things about the church I grew up in, they have opened their doors for day care and women health issues.

But to answer the question, my parents had more influence over what I am now, but the churches played their parts - even if it was negative.

Christian...

...but, not any specific religion. My father & mother raised all of us (my famiy) to read the Bible, believe in God. I have been to Jewish Synagogues ('course the fact that it is a synagogue would mean Jewish), Lutheran, Episcopalian, Jehovah Witness, Seventh Day Adventist, Pentecostal of all types, Baptist, Nazerene, Church of Christ, Catholic, etc. etc. etc. We were taught to never look down on someone just because their beliefs weren't the same as ours and maybe if we stop and listen we can learn.

I feel all religions have a grains of truth and good people in them that are earnest in their beleifs and I think that is the main thing. So, I think mainly if I live the best that I know how and treat my fellow man no matter race, religion, sex as I would like to be treated then I'll be okay.

I don't argue religion because I find that is a moot point one that most times will not reach a satisfactory end. I believe what I believe and I will not try to sway you my way no more than I want you trying to sway me your (universal you)way. I will respect others rights to their beliefs as I expect them to respect the rights that I have to my beliefs.

But, I am glad my parents took me to so many different faiths because I think it made me more rounded and more respectful of others beliefs.

Okay off of my soapbox I get!

My family had several rules... one of which was that while under their roof, you had to attend church at least on sunday mornings. So for eighteen years of my life I was basically forced into going to church. Not that it is necessarily bad...for some people that might be ideal. For me it wasn't.

To get straight to the point, at the age of seven I started having 'dreams', and I couldn't see myself staying with a religion that said that anyone who could see or tell the future other than prophets.....were 'soothsayers' and of the devil.

Who would want to try and believe in a religion that for the most part, is telling you that you are evil and you don't belong there anyway?

I suppose that the closest description would be Christian spliced with some Buddism, pagan ideas, and a various mismash of things picked out of everything from comics to the crashing of waves on the NorCal coast. Close enough?

I admit that I don't really believe in any of the christian religions there are around. I just can't come to terms with that they say that human beings were created as we are now, and didn't evolve over millions of years, which the evidence tells me.

If I were going to believe in a religion, it would probably be one of the religions that the "nature people", like American Indians or Aboriginals, belive in.

I was a member of the danish state church for several year, which you become when you get baptized, until I left it about 8 or so years ago.

Agnostic...

Does that qualify for a Religion?...

Should Muslims blow up innocent Jews?

OH boy.... the boomba has been unleashed!!

Sorry Jaded.. just had to say Hi since you have a similar screename! :)

I do have some thoughts regarding your topic... but trust me, you don't want to get me started!

I started as an athiest in a family of athiests. I had no use for God, Bible or Christianity.

Needless to say things have changed, no I wasn't brainwashed, circumstances provided some rather eye opening experinces which made me run after and find some truth.

I went through a lot of the religious organizations in my area and finally settled with Christianiyty seeming to make the most sense of what I had come across and studied. Thats not to say that I agree with everything that is in the 'Christian' churches that there are out there, as I try to stick with the bible as my source of authority.

With that said, I have no disrepect for other religions, or religious practice. Just as I had freedom to choose for myself, I defend everyone choice to choose what path they want to follow and wish them the best along the way.

Therefore, If I have offeneded anyone I deeply apologize, and add be true to ourself and what you believe.

D'Ya speak in Tongues, yet?...

Nope, don't see a need to.

Have you been trying to subtly pick on me insideshiraz? I can never be sure with the typed words how things are supposed to come across yet. It's ok, if you are, I just want to be sure I keep my 'They hate me' list and 'they love me' lists clear and seperate.

Speaking in tongues and better yet the interpretation of that babble seems just totaly unbelievable to me. Although my belief system is for the most part christian I for one don't buy that part of it.

I will say that going to a fundamentalist service (eg. Pentacostal) is damn entertaining even for a complete non-believer.

The Pastor is fire and brimstone, the band is rockin', the people are clappin', idiots writhing on the floor others babbling and drooling. They could charge admission. Seriously

Right on Brothah!

Lemme here an AMEN... CAN I get an AMEN!!!

LMAO

Brilliant my brothah.. simply brilliant!

I wanna' testify!

What gets me is why (even here in the frozen north) they all adopt that vaguely southern/rural twang. That accent usualy charms the pants off me but when someone from New Brunswick speaks in it, they just sound silly.

That... and the hair. What is with the fucking hair? Wind tunnel tested for the guys and either the long vaguely hassidic looking curls for the women or a beehive that could penetrate an ICBM silo.

I swear I can pick out a Pentecostal at 200 yards.

I'm a non-practicing non-denominational Christian. I believe the Bible, and in God and all that religious rot. I am just having issues with God.

Why? It's just there.

I've been talking for ten minutes now. Are your pants off yet?

Expertise, you can still tell them from 200 yards with a bag over there heads or I can anyways, same with Baptist, weslyns, penetecostals, roman catholics, presbeterians, jehovahs witnesses, and mormons. Chop off there heads, well not literally, and you can still tell tehm apart, I attend one of the groups above and have attended them all at one time or another so if you belong to one of them no offense is meant.

None taken'or intended BT. And my "talent" is limited to Pentecostals.

Religion

Well gang, I wasn't going to even read this thread, let alone reply to it, but what he hell. Pardon me while I step outside of my Happy personna...

Religion, by it's very definition, is a man made concept. And over history, collectively, "man" has been known to be of a feeble mind. If you doubt that, consider how man has lived, and co-existed with all other organisms over time. Typically, due to his own sheer ignorance of anything better. Therefore, I believe religion is for the feeble minded.

Understand, I spent two years going to a Baptist church, and was even baptized Baptist. I believe in a higher power, call it God, Buddah, Zeus even, whatever. I also believe in the Golden Rule. Hell, from time to time I even like to boil that down to the "Bill and Ted"-ism: "Be most excellent to one another."

Religion itself is all too frequently used by people as the panacea answer for all that they cannot cope with rationally. I call it the "Religion Bin." eg. I don't know why I got myself into this prediciment... it must be God's will... There you have it, tossed into the ol' Religion Bin.

The hypocritic behavior of fanatical church goers (reads: Jerry Falwell, Jim Baker, et al) make me puke. Taking advantage of the feeble minded under the guise of a heavenly design... too much. The ritual, the celebration in any form,... man made. From the earliest times of throwing a virgin into a volcano to promote a prosperous harvest, all of them are man made, and feeble minded.

O.K. Back into character... Happy again.
Sorry for that rant, just my $.02.

Burn you bastard BURN

Happy that is a gross generalization and more importantly an incorrect one IMHO.

Here is a more correct gross generalization IMHO. Religion is not for the feeble minded. But there are too many feeble minded religous people. For the very reason you said, it is easier if someone makes all the decisions for you.

Tell me what to do Mr. Falwell please.

Can you just imagine the pummeling that Jesus would give these clowns if he came today. Look at some of these guys. Jack Van Impe for example. I wouldn't buy a used car from a guy with a haircut like that let alone a belief system.

..and a various mismash of things picked out of everything from comics to the crashing of waves on the NorCal coast..

I take it you're a Supergirl fan? Praise Wally!

Catfly? Who ever heard of a catfly? Now a horsefly..

Actually I just started a new religous sect. Its called the

TEMPLE OF LITEROTICA.... where we worship Laurel and Manu

Rules of temple

1. you must forsake all other discussion boards

2. You must practice discussion on this board..even if this means giving up work while at work.

3. preaching is a must but only if the topic of sex is involved.

4. Clothing is optional

5. Anyone talking in tongue must be sure tongue is in appropriate place before talking.

6. no spaming

7. and the most important rule

is..................................THERE ARE NO RULES.

AMEN
