In the story I am working on, I WANT to say that a girlfriend has been on the pill since she was 12.

Is this going to fly?

The story line has the girl currently at 18 but thinking of when her Mother first insisted she start on the pill. Can a character of "proper" age regress back several years for non sexual memories? Is or possibly "would" might be the better word a girl starting menstruation and being put on the pill by an overprotective Mother be considered sexual?

Here is the paragraph:

I've been on the pill since I was 12 because my Mother insisted that it was just a safety precaution for a girl after beginning menustration. She didn't want to take any chances! I don't know what she was worried about as we never talked about anything concerning sex until recently and it was well after I was past my 18th birthday. Mom asked me if I was still a virgin, but really didn't want to hear my answer.

Leave it in or cut it out?

My apologies, I posted this in Story Discussion, but felt it belonged here more so I posted it here too.

That should be just fine. There's a chance it could get rejected on a speed-read during approval, but I doubt it.

You could head that off at the pass by pasting this paragraph into the "notes" section and saying that you wanted to point it out so that it doesn't get mistaken for anything else during the approval process.

I'd leave it in too. It speaks to the mother's mind-set rather than to any actual activity.

Okay, I'm convinced, I'll leave it in and note it in the notes section.

Here's one more that's got me going. When I want to quote something within a quote - is it single quotes or double quotes?

Examples:

"I was just thinking of the "case" against my relationship when you knocked."

"I was just thinking of the 'case' against my relationship when you knocked."

or would this work?

"I was just thinking of the *case* against my relationship when you knocked."

Thanks,

OTOM

Single, in American style (although I wouldn't quote the "case" in that example at all). Quoted material always follows this progression in American style: double, single, back to double. (Chicago Manual of Style 13.28)

One of mine had this line:

"On my fourteenth birthday [character's grandmother] took me aside and told me all about safe sex. Nothing I hadn't already learned in school, but still."

Goes on to mention that Grandma had a shotgun wedding at sixteen. That all went through fine, so yours should be OK with mods. That said...

IMHO, it'd be unusual that a responsible doctor would prescribe the pill for a 12-year-old solely as a precaution against pregnancy. Not impossible, but I'd find it a little jarring in a story without more explanation.

A twelve-year-old may not be responsible enough to stick to the pill schedule, and even if she does, it's no protection against STIs. There are some other concerns about whether the pill is appropriate at that age.

That said, there are other reasons why a doctor might prescribe it, e.g. to help with acne or heavy periods. Even if the real purpose is contraception, the doctor or the mother might invoke one of these as a more palatable excuse.

For my particular story, let us say that the pills were for the Mother's peace of mind and not necessarily for the young 12 year old's protection and as the story unfolds the reader is led to this understanding through the revelation that the Mother is only 32 and her daughter is currently a well versed 18.

Nothing further need be said as I let the math speak for itself and the reader can figure out the ages then the Mother's desire for the girl to have protection at such an early age becomes clear. It has nothing to do with the daughter and everything to do with the Mother.

The rules say that no sexual activity by under-18s is allowed. I can't see that your 'non-sexual memories' break the rules.

I don't see a problem, except with your spelling of menstruation.

Come on... give me a break... I got it right once - the first time - I just got fat fingers the second time through!! LOL!! It's that brain to fingers thing - all the letters are there - just a little out of order!!

It was quoted so... even if I edit the original post and correct the second spelling, it'll still appear wrong in all the quoted boxes.

You's good to go! We just love being pernickety - ignore us.

I got put on the pill when I was 11 to help regulate my menstrual cycles since I have ovarian cysts, not sure if it's normal, just saying it happens. Lol

Oh it definitely happens. The question is more related to Lit's rule against underage sex. But stating someone is on the pill should be okay.

Well, yes, but that wouldn't be why it was mentioned in an erotica story.

It would be interesting to know from the OP if this story had any trouble posting with the "on the pill since 12" in it.
