I did a reformat of my computer. I disconnected my external drive but I also had a smaller drive (internal) labeled D that I use. Well, I just noticed after installing all software and updates that for some reason the C drive is now labeled D and vice versa. Why did this occur and can I change it. I always heard the primary drive should be labeled C.

Hi DT.. long time no speak...

I dont know if it makes a difference with the drive lettering. I'll take a stab and guess that everything is working okay though, right? I wouldnt quote me on it though. I only know enough about computers to make mine work the way it's supposed to.

Try unplugging the old secondary dive and rebooting.. see if it changes back to C, it should.. the shut down and hook teh other drive back up.. there is a way to change the dive letters.. I'm asumingyou are using WinXP.. GO to Control Panel then to Administrative Tools.. then to Computer Management.. Find Disk Management and you can rename teh disk there.. along with all kinds of other disk related things.. like formating a newor old secondary drive.. just be careful as you can lock yourself out of a hard drive and make it unuable.. To change teh drive designation.. highlight the drive you wish to change and right click and select Change Drive Letter.. note that Windows will not let you have two drives with teh same letter at the same time so you'll have to juggle desinations to swap C and D..

Yeah, I remembered thats probably the way to do it after I posted this. So I'll give it a shot. But I do think that the master drive should be labeled C.

It's weird that the primary master drive isn't C:.. You might end up reinstalling WinXp again.. but I'd remove teh secondary drive if you do..

Yeah but I don't wanna have to go through all that crap again. I don't know why it did that. I don't recall it doing it before either.

I've built systems and installed WinXp 30 or so times and it's never done that to me either.. but from expereince any time I have a littel rpoblems like that it usually only gets worse and I ended up starting over eventually so I just do from teh start now..

Well thats what I did. I reformatted and reinstalled damn near everything. I don't wanna do it again.

I use this program, Letter Assigner I can't guarantee if it works for XP or not, but it's free and has never caused me any probs over several hard drive changes, reformats and partitioning.
I'll have a bit of a look around for a definite XP one.
Edit:
After a bit of searching all I have found is that the above program is not recommended for XP, but you don't need it as XP already has that ability. :rolleyes:

Ok I found this, which I guess is the same as was mentioned earlier. Did you do it the way it mentions in the highlighted area?

On windows NT, 2000, XP, what you gotta do is go to:
Control Panel->
Administrative Tools->
Computer Management->
Storage->
Disk Management->

Right click on whatever partition you want to change the letter of and click "Change drive letter and path".
Pick a drive letter.

Sometimes in order to exchange letters between drives you'll have to change the letter of one of the drives to something random, restart, change the other one to the first drive's letter, restard and only then return and change the first drive to the second drive's letter. That's because windows can't change the drive letter of a drive that's being used by the OS at the current moment.

Yeah, I knew that much. But you cannot change the "C" drive. I reformatted again and started over. Thanks anyway.
