Redistricting Wars

New York passes new Congressional map

Good news for fair elections.

The state Senate passed the map first in a 45-17 vote, with three Republicans joining every Democrat. The Assembly immediately followed suit in a 115-33 vote, with a number of Republicans voting in favor of the map. The vote happened after Hochul allowed the Legislature to expedite a vote on the new map, along with a bill to change the timeline for candidates seeking office to file a petition to run.

The Legislature’s vote is the latest — and close to final — move in a long saga to introduce new, fair congressional districts in the Empire State.

Harvard law professor Nicholas Stephanopoulos, said the map is “close to perfect in its partisan neutrality.”

I remember telling everybody in 2016 what a threat Trump was to the supreme court.

Good thing we escaped those buttery males. Think how devastating that would be for everybody across the country. Who needs reproductive rights, voting rights, environmental stewardship when those pesky buttery males need to be stopped.

And sadly enough, most of this was caused by people (read men) who we entrusted with the common good and the safety and stability of society through leadership. That train has sailed.

Umm, these cases are all recent, this year or last and all heard by the same Nine, yet with different outcomes. There is no pre/post Donny Effect here.

That's a damn shame. They should have gerrymandered until there no districts a Republican could win. Enough of this they go low, we go high bullshit. They go low, we go fucking lower. All the states those fascists control, they gerrymander the shit out of it. Whenever we have a chance we should fuck them hard.

Trump put three of the current justices who are making these rulings in place. I'm not sure why you don't see the connection. The reality is the American public screwed the supreme Court because of those dang buttery males. This is why we are dealing with this.

My point is that they did not rule consistently on all three cases, or other similar recent cases.

And that really doesn't matter. The issues they have ruled on, the hot button ones, like reproductive rights, voting rights etc are going to be eviscerated. Because buttery males. That is fact.

America fucked up and so did you. Because you yourself bought into all the stupid conspiracies. You were spreading them round just like everybody else - just like you continue to do -because you have a hard-on of hate for the Clintons. Especially HRC.

Because of that attitude and that type of bias the election went to Trump. And now we've got an overly partisan supreme court which legislates from the bench and guts American rights.

It was stupid and still is. It is quite literally cutting off our nose to spite our face.

Their decisions have no consistency. This is the same type of case they supported in Alabama and Louisiana, yet they reject it here?

Supreme Court rejects racial gerrymandering claims on South Carolina redistricting maps

The justices' opinion comes after a lower court ruled that South Carolina could use the challenged maps in the 2024 election.

i couldn't help but enjoy Justice Kagan's little reference to alito's upside down flag in her dissent remarks.

alito:
"The Challengers provided no direct evidence of a racial gerrymander, and their circumstantial evidence is very weak."
Kagan:
Kagan disagreed, saying the challengers had "introduced more than enough evidence of racial gerrymandering to support the District Court’s judgment,"
"The majority invents a new rule of evidence to burden plaintiffs in racial-gerrymandering cases," Kagan wrote. "As of today, courts must draw an adverse inference against those plaintiffs when they do not submit a so-called alternative map — no matter how much proof of a constitutional violation they otherwise present. Such micro-management of a plaintiff ’s case is elsewhere unheard of in constitutional litigation."

"But as with its upside-down application of clear-error review, the majority is intent on changing the usual rules when it comes to addressing racial-gerrymandering claims," Kagan added.

You tried to say it had nothing to do with Trump. Which is blatantly obviously insanely erroneous.

Why do you expect them to? They are partisan judges placed specifically to legislate from the bench regardless of the law. If you are looking for consistency, don't look to judges placed by Trump or other conservative republican presidents. They stacked the court and people like you let them.

And yes, you are one among many who are responsible for these travesties. Because buttery males were more important.

I find it the height of irony that people in your position complain about the supreme court they helped bring about.

Flag Boi is not an Orange Appointeee.

Nor is Clarence.

And my point is consistency. Alabama and Louisiana are the same case as SC.

And the one most directly responsible for the current court make up is Turtle Boi, he of the flubbering chin and stalling conciousness.

radical "Justices" are not a recent invention. They didn't pop into existence with the election of Trump.

What's new is the collective refusal to acknowledge precedence, doing away with one of the pillars of consistency that gave the Supreme Court it's validity.

Thomas twisted both law and precedence (via "new readings") along with Scalia for years.
The turning point was Dubya putting Alito on the court, one of the gravest miscarriages of justice in 50 years.
As early as 2011, legal scholars began sounding the alarm that Alito had ZERO regard for precedent and reveled in his ability to be a one-man wrecking crew whilst "legislating from the bench". Kavanaugh is Alito-lite. Barrett is the same.
Gorsuch is the Supreme Court wild card (80% maga, 20% what-the-hell-was-he-thinking).

Three of the current Supreme Court justices were political hacks working for Dubya on Bush v. Gore. We have the most political Supreme Court since the 1920s, thanks to Mitch McConnell and Buttery Males.

And having Trump installing 3 more conservative justices because buttery males was not the way to go.

You are part of this. You own part of this. You still think HRC is evil. It's the same stupid repetitive bullshit that the conservatives have used to tear her down for 30+ years. No she's not perfect, but your diatribes - in concert with all those other buttery male choirs - put Trump in place. And he put this court in place.

That is the reality. You helped elect Trump. You and the anti-clintonistas that thought buttery males was the most evil thing ever.

^^^ False.

I held my nose in '16, but did what needed to be done.

None of that changes the fact that the Nine were not consistent in their rulings on these three recent cases that have nothing to do with anything before they were filed.

And yes, Billary screwed up badly. Both of it. Hopefully the kid never gets into politics.

You are NOT wrong.

"Some" people should be ashamed of themselves for parroting buttery males (etc).

🤬

Of course, shame doesn’t undo the damage their parroting of buttery males (etc) resulted in.

🤬

He's not the only one. He is one among many who complain about Trump and how insane he is, what a mess he is. But at the same time they tore HRC down, spread conservative propaganda, obsessed about buttery males and on and on and on. They bitched about her unpopularity and lack of ethics - only to actively work to elect someone who had higher unfavorables and less ethics.

That was the effect. They couldn't remain silent. They had to actively engage on an almost daily basis in the conservative propaganda that was used against her. And the one above, will continue to harp on HRC. All while not accepting the responsibility that he and so many like him played in Trump's victory.

Now SCOTUS is outside of the law - creating legislation outside of the constitution, stacked to partisan insanity and will do real damage to the country (already has - Dobbs). And he - and those who like him actively spread all the conservative venom about HRC - stand around in wide eyed wonder at this new reality.

Which they were repeatedly warned about and instead chose to disregard and dismiss the warnings and the messengers.

Fucksakes.

After spending hours that added up to weeks and months repeating conservative propaganda meant to defeat her.

Congrats. You succeeded.

They will NEVER understand how much damage they did to HRC, even IF they DID eventually vote for her. (See also: Bernie Sanders.)

🤬

Correct.

I remember trying to support and defend HRC in 2016. One could not post or announce their support for HRC without listing a bunch of caveats - because they would be shot down by not just conservatives, but democrats. With massive venom, repeating all the conservative talking points. Without regard for truth. They were committed to communicating just how evil HRC was (is). They weren't happy unless you capitulated. And if you didn't? Derision, namecalling etc. Honestly it was a lot like dealing with current Trumpers in many ways. The irrationality and levels of commitment to their hate. This was a daily, hourly thing. On and on and on.

I hope that none of the Billaries ever dare show their faces in politics again.

The one most responsible for the fall of the US in '16 was Wasserman-Shultz and a few others who essentially pre-ordained Billary to be the nominee at the expense of all others. And to an extent that includes Joe (it's her turn) for not running then.

But none of that has anything to do with the Nine not ruling consistently on three recent and similar cases.

Yeah, still doesn't get it.

Good thing you held your nose - while badmouthing her using conservative propaganda every single day multiple times a day. For years.

(FYI - a conservative stacked court doesn't care about legislative consistency.)

In 2018, Michigan voters rejected the traditional model of having state legislators create electoral maps. They chose a different method aimed at removing extreme partisanship from the redistricting process. In 2021 the state used an independent commission made up of four Democrats, four Republicans and five independents to redraw the state’s legislative and congressional maps.

Lyons-Eddy says Michigan could be an example for what a better redistricting process could look like. “I think we can do a little bit better each time,” she said. “But I think the model of an independent citizens redistricting commission that excludes politicians and that requires people to work across parties to establish district lines is absolutely the way this should be done.”

What Is the Future of Redistricting? Perhaps a Politician-Free Process, Experts Say

A sensible redistricting system like this would be a big step forward in most states.

I've been saying that for years.

People need to listen to me.
