No not like that. It's what they call the 4th of July celebration here.

So the question is do you have any plans? Fireworks, BBQ, anything? Do you put up a flag or have one up always? Do you feel patriotic and pride or not so much? I find it odd that after 9-11 I saw flags everywhere and now unless you count our home I don't see any in our neighborhood.

We're going to my moms. We'll have a barbeque at her house, then head over to Lake Sacagawea for the fireworks. Then we'll head home, cause I have a humira treatment the next day.

We feel patriotic, obviously. I have a brother in the Army, and K's national guard, and I'm very proud of them. I've put together a CD of patriotic songs, and my mother already has a flag up.

Oh yeah...

4th of July/Independence Day is my second favorite holiday - right after Christmas.

Me and a few buddies for the last several years have gone out and pooled our money to buy ordinance (as opposed to fireworks - with 2 ex-Army types and a firebug what do you expect?) and this year we bought $700 worth of stuff (at 20% over wholesale). We fuse it all together so we can sit back and relax and enjoy the show with everybody else.

Besides the obvious there are a few other interesting facts about the 4th of July:

Both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on July 4th, 1826.

July 4th 1863 - General Lee withdraws from his position in Gettysburg, Pa after being fought to a standstill the previous 3 days (which when you are in the offense, a draw is as bad a defeat)
- General Grant accepted the surrender of General Pemberton (who was from Pa but his wife was a Southerner) on the courthouse lawn at Vicksburg, MS. The siege began on 22 May.

Both events were considered "turning points" in the war.

PS - the flag flies on all the time ~ weather permitting, of course)

Thanks for the facts. Do you have any fire concerns in your area? It's dry here but they haven't but any ban on as they have in the past. I'm all about fireworks but flames coming toward the house, not really what I'm looking for you know?

It rained in this area last week at least an inch. We have a 30 gallon water tank w/ pump and hose that we keep on standby - just in case. ;)

In Oregon you're not allowed to use a lot of fireworks without a permit. I'm not sure exactly what the rules are, but anything that flies is illegal. Of course lotsa people go over the border and sneak 'em in, but if you get caught it's a hefty fine.

I love MN.

We're safe.

You can have snakes and sparklers.

I'm thinking about that South Park episode with the giant snake.

We're probably going to the fireworks along the Mississippi. There are official displays but you have to go to WI if you want to play on the edge.

I consider myself extremely patriotic. I think we are in a horrible period right now, but I believe in the long-haul project that is the US. Anything that Ben Franklin thought up has to be good.

BBQ with A and his family tommorrow

fireworks scare me so A said wed avoid them this year

I will support my country by contributing to the economy..I'm going shopping. :)
In the evening we will head to one of the fireworks displays. Weather permitting, we might take the boat out so we can see all three displays.

Not so legal here either... in fact the guy I buy them from sells them to support his habit of blowing 'em too. :nana:

Yep, we have to do time with two different sets of relatives. The crime? Being born. LOL.

No fireworks this year due to drought conditions.

I loved that episode! :D

We are staying inside today. It is HOT here and our little town sucks at fireworks and no way do we want to drive into Atlanta. Plus, I have never seen my Sir drunk so today is the day. We have the booze, chips, and a brand new Scrabble game. I'm hoping to get him drunk enough that I can at least win one game. :catroar:

Yeah I know I am a Brit, but I just wanted to wish you all a happy Independence Day. Have a great time everyone! :rose:

My job doesn't normally allow days off, unless they happen to land on your weekend. In the past, I haven't been off for anything but Thanksgiving, because I normally get Thursdays off.

But, this year, the 4th has landed on a Wednesday, which is my other day off. I don't know what I'm going to do. I guess I"m going to get the paper out and look for the fireworks shows that are scheduled around town. There are quite a few of them, so I won't have a problem picking one.

Actually, because I live on such a large hill, I can sit on my roof and watch a couple of the aerial shows. That sounds like the best deal. Me, a full can of bug repelent, some tunes and a cooler of beer.

I just mowed the back yard, so add the wonderful smell of freshly cut grass to that mixture and except for no female companionship, it sounds like a great night to celebrate being an American.

Any reason they scare you? The noise or fear of being hurt?

I just read a story about a mom that was trying to set something off, apparently not your run of the mill firework, and killed herself in front of her family. It's one of those holidays when someone doesn't listen and pays the price. I feel awful for the family. I think it said she had 3 kids.
